Freight income up 7% in February

Income from freight transportation in SA increased by 7.0% in February compared with the same month last year‚ Statistics SA figures showed on Monday (22 April).

The results of the monthly land transport survey are used to compile estimates of the gross domestic product (GDP) and its components‚ which are used in monitoring the state of the economy and formulation of economic policy. These statistics are also used in the analysis of comparative business and industry performance.

The volume of goods transported increased by 4.5% year-on-year in February.

Stats SA also noted that income from freight transportation for the three months ended February increased by 6.9% compared with the same period last year.

The rise was largely driven by primary mining and quarrying products (13.0% and contributing 4.2 percentage points)‚ followed containers (20.1% and contributing 1.0 percentage points); and other freight (11.0% and contributing 1.0 percentage point).

The number of passenger journeys increased by 4.6% year-on-year in February. The corresponding income increased by 15.4% over the same period.
