Cosatu calls for civil disobedience

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is gearing up for a massive collision with government over the Gauteng e-tolling project‚ with the labour body advocating civil disobedience early next year.
Cosatu calls for civil disobedience

In his end of year statement Cosatu general secretary‚ Zwelinzima Vavi said the organisation was determined to continue the fight against these tariffs.

"We urge motorists not to register with Sanral, not buy e-tags and to make the system unworkable‚" Vavi said.

Cosatu and others opposed to e-tolls suffered a major setback last week when the North Gauteng High Court's judgment brought the scheme closer to implementation‚ and paving way for expansion to other provinces.

Vavi also addressed the issue of the volatile relationship with alliance partners‚ the ANC and SACP.

"We are not in any way feeling stressed about the alliance. It is safe‚" he said.

The outspoken labour leader dismissed claims contained in the ANC's organisational report this week‚ discussed during the party's national conference in Mangaung, that claimed Cosatu sees the democratic government as worse or the same as the apartheid regime.

Vavi dismissed this claim saying: "Cosatu has never made any such comment and never will."
