South Africa was well represented with Gill Gifford of The Star winning the MKO Abiola Award for print journalism and Siphiwe Sibeko winning the Mohamed Amin photographic award. Mpho Moagi clinched the arts and culture award while Anna-Maria Lombard and Alpheus Siebane won the general news award. Moagi, Lombard and Siebane are all with the SABC.
Other southern African journalists accoladed include Zimbabwean Walter Marwizi of The Standard, who won the Free Press Africa award and Maggi Barnard of The Namibian, won the tourism award.
The finalists of the competition received a statuette and a range of prizes such laptops and other electronic equipment. They were also treated to a breakfast with guest of honour Nelson Mandela.
