1FM makes waves in Namibia
1FM is a commercial radio station based in Windhoek. Its listeners fall mainly in the 25-49 age bracket. 68% of listeners speak Afrikaans at home, with 29% who have English as a home language. Full-time presenters include Marcel Theron, Nic Dames and Alastair Baron.
Judy Milne, the director of The Media Connection, a radio airtime sales company with a growing presence in sub-Saharan Africa, says 1FM is doing as well as it is because it provides its listeners with the best music, latest news and interesting content.
According to 1FM Managing Director Gerrit Koekemoer, the core purpose of the station is to give advertisers the best results for their ad spend, and to give listeners what they want so that they have reason to tune in each day. "Our programmes and music are well researched to attract people with disposable income who will be in a position to respond positively to our advertisers' messages," he says.
