    Daily Monitor nominated for Tumaini Awards

    The Daily Monitor newspaper, a publication of The Monitor Publications Limited in Uganda has been nominated for the inaugural Tumaini Awards. The privately-owned newspaper is among the 58 finalists who were selected from over 820 entries for the awards that were launched on 28 March this year, according to the chairperson of Tumaini, Stella Ayo Odongo.

    The Tumaini Awards is an awards program honoring and recognising those individuals, businesses, NGOs and community-based organisations that have made significant efforts to improve the lives of children in Uganda. Tumaini is a Swahili word which means 'hope', signifying the optimism that our work brings to the lives of children.

    Business/Private Sector Award

    Daily Monitor will compete for the Business/Private Sector Award, with businesses including; Afripads Uganda Limited, Atramo Bee farmers Association, Mara Foundation, International Hospital Kampala, Standard Chartered Bank and Uganda Telecom Limited.

    Print journalists who have been nominated for the award include; Eve Mashoo, a features writer at the Daily Monitor, Shifa Mwesigye at staff writer at The Observer newspaper and Conan Daniel Businge a reporter at the New Vision newspaper in Kampala. Electronic journalists who have been nominated for the awards include; Drake Ssekaba, a television talk-show host on Wavah Broadcasting Television (WBS) TV and Anthony Gwano.

    The inaugural awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Serena Hotel in Kampala on 10 June 2011 leading up to the commemoration of the Day of the Africa Child on 16 June 2011.

    Planning and steering committees

    The Tumaini Awards Initiative was developed in partnership with Child Fund, Compassion International, Save the Children in Uganda, the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect (ANPPCAN Uganda chapter), the Uganda Child Rights NGO Network (UCRNN) and World Vision Uganda. Representatives from these six organisations make up the planning and steering committees for this program.

    The Tumaini Awards aim to generate increased community awareness around child rights issues, honor those who deserve to be recognised for their work with children and to inspire others to work harder to improve the lives of children in Uganda.

    According to the organisers, 20 winners will be announced at the awards ceremony. One lifetime achievement award and one Day of the African Child award will also be awarded. Winners are set to receive awards worth UGX50 million.
