Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with over 2.2 million new cases diagnosed in 2020 and it remains the leading cause of cancer-related death among women. South Africa is not immune: over the last two decades, breast cancer incidence has steadily increased, now accounting for 14–30% of all cancers in South African women. Disparities in screening, treatment and survival persist across ethnic and socioeconomic lines, with Black women more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage and to face delays in accessing treatment. High rates of late-stage diagnosis - between 50% and 57% of cases - further compound survival outcomes.
This Somerset Mall event is an opportunity to raise awareness, share knowledge and inspire collective action towards healthier lifestyles, early detection and improved outcomes in the fight against breast cancer.
