The new range comprises three derivatives: the ES 350h EX, priced at R1,051,200; the ES 350h SE at R1,232,700; and the fully electric ES 350e SE at R1,561,000.

The launch gives South African buyers a choice between a self-charging hybrid and a battery-electric luxury sedan. The new ES is also larger than its predecessor, with an 80mm longer wheelbase and a 165mm increase in overall length.

Hybrid and electric powertrains

Both ES 350h models use a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system producing a combined 182kW, with power sent to the front wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.

The fully electric ES 350e SE uses a front-mounted electric motor producing 167kW and 268Nm. Its 74.69kWh battery provides a claimed range of up to 615km on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Lexus says DC fast charging can replenish the battery from 0% to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Owners can charge at home through Lexus Home Charge, while the Lexus app can help locate public charging infrastructure.

More space and technology

The eighth-generation ES measures 5,140mm long and 1,920mm wide, with a 2,950mm wheelbase. Lexus says the longer wheelbase creates more space for rear passengers, while changes to the suspension and vehicle structure are intended to improve ride comfort, steering response and stability.

Inside, the sedan features a 12.3-inch digital driver's display and a new multimedia interface. It also introduces Lexus-first Hidden Switches, which are integrated beneath the dashboard upholstery and illuminate when the vehicle starts.

Driver assistance features across the range include Lexus Safety System+ 4, with functions such as adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assistance, lane tracing, road sign recognition and adaptive high-beam technology. Additional equipment varies by derivative.

The entry-level ES 350h EX includes a 14-inch multimedia display, a panoramic sunroof and a 10-speaker audio system. The ES 350h SE adds features including a head-up display, panoramic view monitor, automatic parking and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

The electric ES 350e SE comes with 21-inch wheels, adaptive variable suspension, semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats and additional comfort features.

Warranty and maintenance

All three models come with a seven-year/105,000km warranty and a seven-year/105,000km maintenance plan. The hybrid and fully electric batteries are covered by an eight-year/160,000km warranty.

The new ES retains the executive sedan format as Lexus expands its powertrain offering, allowing buyers to choose between hybrid and fully electric driving within the same model range.
