Lifestyle

Culturally nourishing

As the winter weather starts enveloping us in its icy embrace, toasty type indoor activities need to be pursued. Wining and dining is always an excellent option, as is heading for some cultural nourishment at our local theatres or, for some not-so-always-culturally-nourishing entertainment, at the cinema. There is a host of worthy productions and movies currently on that should warm your heart and mind.

Eugene Yiga reviews thriller type play The List, as well as the funny but heartfelt Spinster. He also interviews New York producer and director Drew Rienstra about the Cape Town theatre scene. Daniel Dercksen enjoys productions Special Thanks To Guests From Afar, and Champ, which are both on for their second run.

In movie news, Charles Siboto is somewhat disappointed by the rubbishly fun GI Joe: Retaliation, while Daniel Dercksen enjoys the zany Seven Psychopaths, and insightful film The Host.

Travel contributor Brian Berkman heads to Franschhoek for a few rounds of golf at the exclusive Pearl Valley, and preaches sensible packing for all trips and holidays. Motoring editor Henrie Geyser gives his thoughts on the classy Toyota Auris.

New competitions this week include two full-weekend passes to the Utopia Music Festival in Nekkies, and two tickets to The Songs, an opera recital at Erin Hall in Cape Town.

PS. If you are one of the terribly bereaved who has not received tickets to the 5Gum Kooks concert, there is a glimmer of hope. BizLifestyle will be hosting a #5GumExperience ticket giveaway for both the Cape Town and Joburg events tomorrow via the BizLounge Twitter and Facebook pages, so keep a look out!

Here's to keeping things toasty!

Auris kitted out in classy finery
[Henrie Geyser: motoring editor] The new Auris is aesthetically quite a brave move by the rather conservative Japanese carmaker and all the signs are there that future Toyotas will look more like its cheeky new 86 sports car than the Plain Jane passenger cars it has been churning out for years. Fashion collection dedicated to women facing violence
The key piece in Gert-Johan Coetzee's new collection, which will be revealed at SA Fashion Week this Saturday, is inspired by a sea urchin. Soul-jacked
[Daniel Dercksen] In a world subjugated by inhumane cruelty, soulless encounters and emotionless relationships, pure love is indeed an alien host in search of significance and fidelity. The Host, New Zealand writer-director Andrew Niccol's perceptive adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's bestseller, is a fascinating journey of connecting with the soul, and reconnecting with love that feeds our existence.
