And the award goes to...

With the Oscars just past it seems fitting we bring you a movie dominate newsletter this week. Both Charles Siboto and Daniel Derksen discuss different film making thoughts; Siboto on the idea of storytelling and how gaming is translated to movies while Derksen looks at what it takes to create a blockbuster. Derksen also reviews the theatre for screen film The Magistrate and the proudly SA film, Verraaiers. Keeping it proudly local, SA's own Academy Awards equivalent; the Jozi Film Festival winners are announced.

And talking about awards, the prestigious Annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards nominees have been announced and we are happy to announce that our very own contributor Eugene Yiga has been invited to be a member of the board! In other theatre news Michael Britton has a foot tapping time at the Godfrey Johnson Showcase.

Motoring editor Henri Geyser reviews the much anticipated Opel Astra OPC while travel contributor Will Smith explains the life idyllic when it comes to staying in luxury villas in France.

New competitions this week include two ticket to the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert featuring Goldfish. We will be picking and announcing are lucky Ramfest and Skrillex winners later this week so if you haven't entered better do quick fast.

Happy Tuesday!

Ruth Cooper, production manager (@biz_lounge)

Storytelling across platforms
[Charles Siboto] One of the truly great things about stories is that there are many ways to tell them and share them with each other. Stories are in our DNA as a species. We tell beautiful stories and we tell ugly stories. Read more >>

South African filmmaking at its most profound
[Daniel Dercksen] The temperate and evocative Afrikaans masterwork Verraaiers (Traitors) takes a nostalgic journey into the past that shaped the future of South Africa. Film is a window through which we can experience the world and, with Verraaiers, the wistful reminiscence instils a pride of who we are as South Africans, and unloads the baggage of our history. Braving the Box Office
[Daniel Dercksen] The box office in South Africa (and worldwide) is a war zone in which two unseen forces are at constant war: those who go to the movies, and those who make movies. It's tough being a film that is released on circuit and thrown to the wolves; like a lamb led to slaughter or Daniel in the Lion's Den, nothing can save a movie from its fateful demise or victory, not even prestigious awards or lofty reviews. The Magistrate: one appointment with the law you simply cannot miss
[Daniel Dercksen] Filmed theatre on the big screen offers out-of-this-world entertainment that is unequivocal; its uniqueness lies in its exceptional capability of giving us the best of both worlds. Read more >>

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's 2013 World Tour
[Eugene Yiga] The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO) will be celebrating 125 years of outstanding musicianship by visiting six continents in its 2013 World Tour. Pretoria? Sold out. Cape Town? Theatre

The Godfrey Johnson Showcase
[Michael Britton] Do not expect the show I describe to be the same as the one that you see when you go to the delightful Kalk Bay Theatre to see the Godfrey Johnson Showcase. This extraordinary performing artist will present a different selection of songs from his repertoire for each of the four nights that the show runs. Yes, it's sad that it is a short run, but it remains a show that sparkles with humour as Johnson brings his unique touch of genius to songs that you thought you knew. Read more >>
