Post-holiday blues

As the working year gathers momentum and sunny holiday memories become distant, upcoming worthwhile entertainment events are greatly needed to make the 9-5 humdrum existence more tolerable. Luckily, there is always a variety of top class entertainment options to break the monotony. UTC 2013 is imminent and if you have yet to purchase a ticket, why not enter our comp and stand the chance to win one full weekend pass. The Ramfest line-up in CT, JHB, DBN and PE has been announced and looks to be a monstrous beast of a fest, while the second Cape Town Electronic Music Festival to be held in mid-Feb is turning up the volume on EDM.

If seriously feeling the post-holiday blues then why not start planning the next holiday break. Travel contributor Will Smith (not that Will Smith, obvs) explains the benefits of planning a trip with a travel concierge. A concierge would also greatly assist with some of the more unusual requests that travellers might have; fortune tellers, lullabies and goats are just some of the above norm requests made by guests of the Protea Hospitality Group seen over 2012.

Daniel Dercksen recommends blockbuster of the season, the tragic musical Les Misèrables as a must see, while Eugene Yiga reviews the silly yet fun theatre adaption of all seven Harry Potter books in two man production, Potted Potter.

Two tickets to this Sunday's Old Mutual Kirstenbosch concert featuring Toya Delazy and Lindiwe Suttle are up for grabs!

Toad in the hole
[Nina Timm] Toad in the hole sounds to me like a chapter from a Beatrix Potter book and my imagination runs riot of a frog breathing heavily from a lilly pad or, even worse, a frog jumping at me (okay, so I have a frog phobia). The weird, wonderful, and just plain kooky hotel requests for 2012

A dignified masterwork
[Daniel Dercksen] The radical vitality of Les Misèrables is a provocative and commanding visceral experience that offers a refreshing rebirth of musicals on the big screen. Breaking away from the clinical constraints and pure sound of contemporary musicals (and music), which results in a music video rendition of dramatised music and songs, Les Misèrables is a rare and dignified masterwork that strips the genre of its pretention and deception.
