Wave of success

The BMR has released its 2011 forecast of retail sales and it's hopeful news for the industry with a prediction of over 3% growth. Tim J Smith is aiming to help the industry reach this goal with his guide to understanding pricing. Colleen Funkey keeps her eye on the horizon for brand trends, while Kevin Meltzer believes self-service to be bigger than ever this year. December sales figures are coming in with positive news for Shoprite, Redgwoods, bidorbuy and Mr Price. Even Deloitte has reported that there are fewer retailers in the red. With the second week of 2011 done and dusted, may we continue riding this wave to success!

[2011 trends] The year of accountability
[Chris Moerdyk: @chrismoerdyk] From a marketing point of view, 2011 is destined to be the year of accountability, both in terms of the efficiency with which budgets are employed and perhaps, too, this year will see advertising agencies and their strategests finding it harder and harder to keep convincing their clients that the 30-second spot is still worthwhile, but that it makes sense to spend more money per minute producing TV commercials than it does to film expensive blockbuster movies such as Avatar. Guarding against cybercrime
[Fred Mitchell] With the explosion of the Internet has come a silent global epidemic, the underworld of cybercrime, which puts every internet user at risk. This crime covers from annoying spam emails to far more sinister fraud and identity theft matters or cyber terrorism. Because of its indiscriminate nature, it affects young and old computer users, regardless of race, gender, nationality or social standing. According to a recent Norton Cybercrime Report, 65% of adults worldwide have been a victim of some form of cybercrime and only 3% of respondents indicated that they did not expect to be such a victim at some point.
