The International Media Summit, held in South Africa for the first time last week, brought together local and foreign media, Government and business in a unique forum which debated relationships between all, as well as the tone of reporting on South Africa and Africa. It yielded very interesting debate, insight and networking opportunities which made it all the more puzzling that some of the biggest media groups in South Africa were unrepresented. If the BBC, Reuters, GCIS and even independent journalists could make the time to turn up to address key media issues on the continent and participate and listen to debate, why not our own media conglomerates? Even Government communication services apologised for not being more involved this year and promised to rectify that next time round. The lack of further specialist journalism training and the high turnover of journalists at mainstream media houses was a concern raised by many speakers. A full report with recommendations emanating from the two days will be released later this year. To track this, log on to www.internationalmediaforum.com.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

  • Marketing
SA's youth a notable influence market
The second annual Sunday Times Generation Next Brand Survey 2006 has revealed that South Africa's urban-dwelling youth constitutes a primary consumer market of substantial value, being responsible for an overall cash spend in excess of R6.454 million each month.

Loeries starting to do job for marketing
[Chris Moerdyk] Everyone involved in the now defunct Marketing Federation of SA (MFSA) must be squirming with embarrassment to see the Loerie Awards becoming more and more successful with every year that goes by. Because these were the people who claimed that the ad industry was incapable of organising the event and that without marketers running things, it would be a disaster.

Key strategies for senior marketing professionals
[David Nowitz] Business strategies form the basic foundation upon which a marketing strategy is built. No matter how successful a marketing strategy is, it can only reach its true potential if it is underpinned by a successful business strategy. As a person who has been in marketing for some time I believe that the more things change in marketing and business, the more the basics of strategy remain universal.

The 4 Ps of sustainable service success
[Vanessa Bluen] Most service initiatives focus on telling people what they already know instead of addressing the implementation gap between what we know versus what we do. The focus of the new generation of service interventions that are making an impact are those that don't undermine participants by assuming that their know-how isn't in place but focus instead on using training sessions as realistic service problem-solving sessions with a bias to action.

Direct marketing conference raises hot topics
In the first half of 2007, South African marketers look set to face tough new data privacy legislation that will change the way they reach and market to consumers. Understandably, this topic was a major talking point at this year's second Annual International Direct Marketing Conference, recently hosted in Johannesburg and Cape Town as a joint venture between Front Foot Strategic Consulting and the Direct Marketing Association (DMA).

Client to partner - how to make the shift - Actuate
[Grace Harding] All industries are looking at building lasting relationships with clients. We hear it all the time - the shift from product push to identifying solutions, needs surfacing versus selling... blah, blah, blah.

Does advertising work? - The Jupiter Drawing Room
Companies rely increasingly on advertising agencies to position, package and present brands for public consumption, sometimes forgetting that all consumer touch points need to be covered. Renee Silverstone, CEO of The Jupiter Drawing Room (Johannesburg), says that although brands are primary and now counted in many companies' bottom line, advertising itself remains undervalued.

Grand Clio in Miami but only Bronze at Loeries?
The 9November group of companies submitted 11 entries for the 2006 Loerie Awards, all of which reached finalist stage and seven of them were converted into Loeries. "Obviously, we are pleased with our conversion rate," comments Charl Nel, director of 9November. Keeping consumers guessing
Road users in and around Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban have in the last few weeks been baffled by the presence of a number of green camouflage vehicles asking "Are you Green?" Yet its proudest moment may have been winning the hearts and minds of the viewing public, who voted the Nedbank 'Shopping' commercial as their number one favourite in a new category - 'Everyone's Loerie Award'.

    Forever in blue jeans
[Mike Abel] In Neil Diamond's classic hit, he begins with the lyrics "Money talks, but it don't sing and dance and it don't walk". He goes on to say that's why he'll forever be in blue jeans. Consumers' perceptions on what makes a brand "hot" or "cool" come from a host of sources and how they rate your brand depends on what they've heard, read or from and different interactions with the brand. Reporting on "the other side of the moon"
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Foreign media's coverage of Africa has systematically changed over the years - thanks to new technology, shifts in the political landscape and change of strategy - to report on more positive stories, even though doubt still lingers in many parts of Africa about foreign reporters' willingness to show "the other side of the moon".

Lack of "consistency" in SA business reporting
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] In the last 15 years or so, business media in South Africa has done a splendid job, remarked Mzi Malunga, BDFM Publishers MD, speaking at the International Media Forum held 20 - 21 September 2006 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. But nevertheless, he said that some sections of business media lack consistency in their reporting. And many believe that this tends, one way or another, to overshadow their achievements.

Western media portrays grim picture of Africa
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Many African critics and politicians, including President Thabo Mbeki, firmly believe that despite making "some significant socio-economic and political progress", Africa's coverage by western media remains unfair, biased, sometimes inaccurate, unbalanced and too much focused on negative stories. This has emerged at the two-day International Media Forum, which started yesterday, Wednesday 20 September 2006, at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

Zuma: investors don't look at one man
