Thanks to media partners Media24 and Media Hype, Bizcommunity.com will be creating a bit of a ‘hype’ in Margate this coming weekend at the annual Loeries Festival. Look out for our ‘walking TV promoters’ and make sure you let our team know what you think of Loeries and pose for a pic for our photographer! I had emails after the last Loeries from some readers asking why we focus so heavily on Loeries every year with our special ezines and focus – what about the other marketing sectors? It is because the Loeries represents the advertising orgasm after a long night of foreplay – and it does involve multiple partners! There is not one industry discipline in this sector that doesn’t have something to do with promoting a brand or media type in some way or another. Over 4000 tickets have been sold for both Loerie awards nights and over 5000 industry people plus crew are expected to descend on Margate 15 – 18 September: the marketers are there to see if their brand advertising does well, the media owners are there in full force to ensure the advertising creatives keep their media top of mind when designing award winning ads and everyone else involved in the end result is there – from media planners to designers, film and production, sales, publicity, branding and many other new media and experiential promotions will be showcased. Above all it’s also a lot of fun and the only place to connect with the current players, as well as the future of the industry – the students who also descend in droves. See you on the beach!

Bon voyage! Louise Marsland, editor editor@bizcommunity.com

The Achilles heel of service delivery
[Chris Moerdyk] With security having been stepped up a major international airports, there is no question now that the brand images of many countries that rely on tourism and foreign investment are being tarnished. And while one might complacently suggest that the airport security shambles syndrome is harming every country pretty well equally, from a marketing point of view, an enormous opportunity awaits the country that is prepared to work really hard at maintaining security and still make visitors feel less like criminals or cattle.

Creativity through consumer research - Bateleur Research Solutions
The infamous focus group certainly has its place in the research methodology toolbox, but has sadly been abused by researchers and clients alike for decades now. Most marketing executives and all advertising professionals will have heard the myth that "consumers can't be creative". What this really means is that consumers can't be creative in a focus group. And here's why...

Clothing quota raising more questions than answers
[Chris Moerdyk] From a marketing point of view, the agreement between the South African and Chinese governments to restrict clothing imports into this country for the next two years raises a lot of questions and will inevitably not lead to any sort of plausible answers. Purist marketers - they're the one's who don't have shares in local clothing manufacturing companies - will argue that trying to invigorate this country's flagging garment manufacturing industry by restricting imports is simply playing with marketing fire.

Retailers call for suspension of Chinese import quotas
South Africa's six largest clothing retailers - Edcon, Truworths, Woolworths, Foschini, Pepkor and Mr Price - are calling for an urgent and immediate suspension to the Chinese import quota implementation to stop the chaos and cost that this process is already causing, according to a statement issued to the press on Wednesday, 6 September 2006.

    Sales
Increasing productivity and achieving sales goals
[Peter Gilbert] Most businesses can identify with a simple operating rule of thumb: "20% of our salespeople bring in 80% of our sales." Yet this infamous rule actually describes a normal curve or random distribution of top, average and poor sales performers, and there are as many poor performers as strong performers. If the top salespeople of a sales force produce a substantial proportion of total sales, there is an immense opportunity for productivity increases.
