Congratulations to the hard-working Bizcommunity.com sales team who achieved a 'Highly Commended: Small Stand Category' for the Bizcommunity.com stand at Markex Cape Town last week. A big thank you to Scan Display who built our stand and also celebrated its 10th anniversary at Markex this year. Well done to all the other worthy winners. I was privileged enough to attend the seminar by the 'father of marketing today', Philip Kotler last week - brought to South Africa by Global Leaders which also hosted the seriously impressive Global Leaders Africa Summit last month with Tom Peters, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Porter and Scott Bedbury live and in person. Their very professional events with global leaders of such impressive credentials is going to challenge local conference companies for a sizeable share of the market in South Africa as they open an office in Johannesburg in September. Their events have certainly been highlights this year in this arena. Look out for guru Deepak Chopra [www.globalleadersevents.com] in November!

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

He said in order to fulfill their mandate, marketers have to "explore value, create value and deliver value".

The Johannesburg agencies Hunt Lascaris have four, and Ogilvy, Joe Public and Lobedu Leo Burnett three, two and two finalists respectively.

A viral campaign in every sense of the word
TBWA's latest campaign for the Department of Health publicises the availability of HIV/Aids testing across the country in an oblique and humorous manner, harnessing the creative power of disruption thinking. The setup is that calls to a (fake) sex worker's number, advertised in the newspaper classifieds, are recorded as the woman offers her services and then tries to persuade callers to get their HIV status checked.

In two recent rulings, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) of South Africa has ruled in favour of Lovelife's advertising on the basis that the message of safe sex is of crucial importance, despite complaints that the commercials are irresponsible, sexually explicit and inappropriate for young viewers. According to the ASA, complainants who are offended by the advertising are few in comparison to the important safe sex message that Lovelife tries to convey.

    Where are we on convergence?
There still seems to be much confusion about what is meant by convergence and what it can actually offer to whom. What is clear, however, is that it differs from organisation to organisation. As new industry boundaries emerge, products no longer belong to a specific industry or IT platform alone. In short, convergence is a merger of technologies, with increased service delivery and quality as key outcomes.

"Each time the question is the same - why Lacoste? And each time it's the same answer: I take off my polo shirt and I ask the person who dares ask me this question to try it on. Then they understand what you feel when the soft weave of the fabric caresses your skin." Many consumers have these kind of intense connections with brands, but how are they formed, and how can marketers take advantage of them?

    Check it out on TV
Independent supermarket chain Checkout Supermarket Group, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, has launched its first TV commercials in an above-the-line media campaign conceptualised by The Gatekeeper. The 30 second adverts are being flighted on SABC1, SABC2 and e.tv.

    Conversations with great South Africans
The "Conversations with Great South Africans" promotion by Freshpak Rooibos will run during September and October 2006 in support of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). By entering the promotion, either via the 'on pack' mechanic, or in participating Dulce Café stores, consumers stand a chance to win a tea date with icons such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Gerry Rantseli, Mark Pilgrim, Wilna Snyman or Brian Boloyi.

    Sales
    Innovation in the sales environment
[Peter Gilbert] If you cannot differentiate yourself by what you sell, and are unwilling to differentiate by how you sell, you will, by default, have to differentiate by how much you sell it for. Hence sale forces are seeking new and innovative ways of selling products that are increasingly commoditised.

    Sponsorship
    Sponsorship renewal looks beyond 2010
Standard Bank has renewed its investment in, and sponsorship of, South African soccer giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, with a five-season deal valued at R70 million ending in 2011. While the provision of financial services will remain key to the relationship, the renewed investment and elevation to official banking partner affords the bank a much wider business and marketing platform to reach soccer fans and, specifically, the clubs' supporters.

Pay TV media planning workshops a success
Oracle Airtime Sales recently hosted two interactive Pay TV media planning workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town to assist media planners who were still unsure about Pay TV as a medium and the content available on the DStv bouquet.

The homes and people behind the celebrity personas
It's been three years since former Miss Universe Michelle McLean last graced our TV screens as a presenter but now she's back to host BetterBond Celebrity Homes, The Home Channel's latest show, launching on 5 August 2006.

Demand driving TV inflation sky high
Total cost per point (CPP) against All Adults for the first six months of 2006 is up a staggering 20%, compared to 8% for 2004/2005, according to Melanie Walter, media director of Starcom. "Increasing demand will continue to fuel TV inflation and if the current situation persists we will be seeing CPPs peaking at close to 30% higher than previous years, especially once the seasonal impact is factored in," she adds.

More warmth to children with less this winter
Part of its More campaign, which is all about encouraging viewers to experience more of everything and extends to billboards, radio ads, building wraps, street pole ads and press and magazine ads, DStv delivered blankets, soup and soft toys to the Mother of Peace home for abandoned children in Northriding, Randburg. "While 'giving more' to our subscribers is one of DStv's basic tenets, we have extended the concept of "giving more" to our local community too," says DStv marketing manager Lefeedi Maja.

SA Tourism campaign wins global award for National Geographic
National Geographic Channel secured a Gold award for its South African Tourism promotional campaign, in the Consumer Promotion Category, with Annie Griffiths-Belt's film, 'Cape Townships' at the annual PROMAX and BDA Awards held in New York on 20-22 June 2006. The film is one of five 60-second vignettes (www.nationalgeographic.co.uk/explore/southafrica/index.aspx) produced for South African Tourism in 2005 - a core element of the South African Tourism/National Geographic Channel TV-led multi-media partnership.
