| No Comment | Okay, I'm not going to write about the weather again, although as rather water-logged Jo'burgers we've become as anal about the weather as Capetonians are! (It's freezing btw, winter arrived today.) So for those who aren't taking advantage of long leave with all the public holidays, let's look at the launch of SA's own Survivor by Mnet. I for one, can't wait. Imagine, as example, a line up like this trying to survive on an island somewhere in Panama, but with all our unique SA dynamics... Frikkie, the tow truck driver from the East Rand interacting with Sipho, the tough Metro cop from Soweto; with Storm the kugel from Sandton and Dave, the 'horticultural' student from Cape Town? Maybe they will throw in a business high-flyer, a farmer or a surfer dude from Durbs as well... it should be an ad makers dream and a great source of trivia for later on in the year when it launches, as Mnet will pretty much stick to the formula of the hugely successful US version of the show. Trust no one...
Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor@bizcommunity.com

| Marketing | | Ad industry taking serious awards more seriously [Chris Moerdyk] It is encouraging to see advertisers and their agencies taking the Apex Awards more seriously. As South Africa's premier results based awards, it is important for the industry that as much publicity is given to the Apex Awards as possible, simply because these are the only industry awards to which the consumer can relate.
Easter Bunny's off-colour antics
Normally we would delete such an obviously self-promotional press release and one not written too well either, but the pic of two promoters in Easter Bunny suits having it off for their client, Mad Buzz - all in the interests of marketing - was so bizarre that we thought we'd leave it up to the industry to comment.
Marketing isn't an optional extra [Chris Moerdyk] One of the most significant failures of the marketing industry in this country is its ability to market marketing. It is still quite phenomenal how many companies and consumers think that marketing is either pretty much the same as the Lotto, or that it is just an excuse for yuppies to get to own Porches.
Breakfasting on buying behaviour To help local marketers revisit buying behaviour, the Newspaper Advertising Bureau (NAB) will be hosting international brand performance authority Professor John Scriven, of the UK Marketing Science Centre, at three breakfast sessions, to be held in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, towards the end of May 2006.
Marketing Strategy Masterclass - Terrapinn Organisation strategy is supposed to be led by the customer. Therefore, it stands to reason that marketing, the department that tracks customer behaviour, must necessarily lead strategy. But too often marketers fail to do this.

April Fools' joke certainly not a cropper
Crop circles appearing in the maize field of a farm in Heidelberg had South Africans baffled as 'breaking news' bulletins played out on television screens across South Africa last week, with even DJs talking about it on air. But by Saturday, the April Fools' joke, masterminded by Net#work BBDO, had been revealed: the crop circles aligned to form the Cell C logo.
TBWA \ Hunt \ Lascaris not tendering for SAA Account "TBWA \ Hunt \ Lascaris will not tender for the vacant SAA account," announced David Wingfield, MD Johannesburg, today, Thursday, 13 April, citing the fact that the agency needs to continue to focus on their current accounts, look after what they have and maximize output. "We have had a fantastic first quarter and, amongst others, are working on several new pieces of work for clients such as Nissan and Woolworths." Above and beyond this, he says, the agency has local teams doing global work in Beijing, Mumbai, and Moscow for various clients. Locally, the Agency has been conceptualizing and producing work for the re-launch of both Standard Bank and Liberty Life.
A meal to die for
When a recent episode of the hugely popular TV series, "Prison Break", featured a prisoner on death row receiving a request form for his last meal, advertising agency King James spotted a golden opportunity for client Steers. The form was recreated - only this time for a "King Steer burger with large chips". The ad was then tactically placed directly below the TV listings on the day of the next "Prison Break" episode.
Voting in favour of delivery at all times Advertising agency 9November Union is installing a back-up generator that can run at least five Apple Macs, with a printer or two and a few lights as normal emergency back-up, in preparation for a 'winter of discontent' in the Cape. Charl Nel, business director of 9November Union, says, "It is all about client satisfaction and being prepared to deliver under difficult circumstances. The cost of the generator is much less than just losing a morning's work and missing deadlines that put an entire project in jeopardy."

Maturity triumphs at AdMag Awards Habitat - the oldest décor magazine in South Africa at 33 - has won the 2005 AdMag Award for Best Magazine in the Decor Category, announced in Johannesburg on 6 April 2006. "We received this award in 1998 and 1999 but there was less competition then," says editor Colin Sharp. "In today's marketplace it's very fulfilling to have won because we've made great efforts to make Habitat evolve with the changing market. We don't feel that our new readers want to live in the sort of homes that their parents used to dust. We've been waving a flag for modernism for some years and it's worked."

Jet Club special projects editor, Noluthando Gweba, says: "Aimed at empowering people by providing accurate information in simple, concise language, it is, in a sense, a form of nation building, a means of strengthening communities and making a difference to ordinary people's lives."
Your Child increases frequency
The new magazine for parents of kids aged 4 - 12, Your Child, has gone from quarterly to alternate monthly. "We've had an extremely enthusiastic response from readers," says editor Kate Sidley. "The magazine fills a very real gap... The only complaint from readers is that they have to wait too long for the next issue!" MD Liezl de Swardt adds, "Your Child has also been well supported by advertisers, who recognise its ability to deliver an important niche - affluent, trend-setting parents of young children. Our advertising support has gone from strength to strength and we now have enough support to increase our frequency."
