This drizzly winter's morning in Jo'burg (there is no point in thinking we're actually going to have a summer up here anymore!) was tinged with sadness today as we woke up to the news that Ken Kirsten was shot dead at his home last night. Even if you hadn't been fortunate enough to work with such a talent, most of us remember growing up with his name via our only access to music videos, the TV show, Pop Shop. He will be missed by many in the industry as is obvious from the tributes pouring in. In another development, the design industry has had enough of free pitches: while the SAA info process for its latest tenders was full to overflowing last week, the design industry has taken a brave stance by refusing to participate in free pitches where designers are not compensated for their ideas. See their open letter to SAA below. As many head off for the Easter holidays and Pesach, safe travelling!

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor: editor@bizcommunity.com

Why a healthy organisational culture matters
[John Bradfield] Culture can reveal a lot about a company. Here's how to tell if your culture is weak or strong. In the 1980s, when I was editing a supermarket magazine, insiders in the retail industry told a favourite story about the three main supermarket chains in South Africa at the time - an anecdote that spoke true about the culture of those companies.

    The need to know
On World AIDS day in 2004, Clover launched 'Project Status', a social responsibility effort to educate all employees on HIV/AIDS. In the culmination of the second stage of the project, R50 000 has been donated to the Philani Clinic in support of the community of Frankfort.

    The emancipation of Standard Bank
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] From 'Simpler. Better. Faster.' to 'Inspired. Motivated. Involved.' and a brand new logo, Standard Bank - South Africa's biggest bank in terms of assets - comes of age, aiming to forge ahead in its bid to make a real difference and stay relevant to the societies in which it operates.

New Standard Bank ads document brand changes
What route do you take when the creative brief requires you to develop a new pay-off line and brand essence for an organisation with an international presence? Such was the case when TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris and Magna Carta were tasked with developing a campaign for Standard Bank that would replace 'Simpler. Better. Faster' and entrench the new pay-off line: 'Inspired. Motivated. Involved'.

    Slogan change uninspired
[Chris Moerdyk] The decision by Standard Bank to change its corporate slogan is marketing lunacy. 'Simpler. Better. Faster.' is to be replaced with 'Inspired. Motivated. Involved.'... so incredibly contrived and corny, one cannot help wondering if this is some sort of April Fool's joke.

Score one for law, zero for pirates
Film producer Anant Singh and his company, Videovision Entertainment, have praised the South African Police Services (SAPS), the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT) for arresting the two people who were involved in pirating the Leon Schuster blockbuster film, Mama Jack.

    Advertising
Ad agencies need to take on board exhibitions
With considerable growth in the exhibition industry over the past few years, it seems "ridiculous" to continue to consider exhibitions as the 'ugly duckling' of the advertising world. Yet advertising agencies are reluctant to take advantage of such a profitable opportunity within a R1.6 billion industry, according to the Exhibition Association of Southern Africa (EXSA).

Unlocking the DNA of luxury - Added Value
Only 10 of the world's top 70 luxury brands produce 80% of the profit. To better understand this elusive world, UK luxury goods consortium Walpole commissioned Added Value to undertake a major research study across three continents. The study cracks the 'DNA code' of luxury brands, categorises luxury consumers and compares their motivations in different markets, revealing that what drives consumers towards luxury brands is the most primal of triggers: the need to feel more desirable.

    What's in a name?
Nampak recently communicated the brand name change of Twinsoft to Twinsaver Luxury to a targeted female market through cinema, club and gym washrooms in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. SAA pitching process criticised by industry
With SAA's recent call for tenders, the issue of unpaid pitching in the design industry has once again raised its ugly head.
