The SA Marketing Research Association annual convention last week was certainly a research-rich gathering of the industry with a packed programme of speeches and networking events over four days. Although SAMRA didn't attract the marketers this time round as they had hoped and the venue was a bit 'rustic' for such an executive gathering - although the invited international speakers still loved being out in the bush among the abundance of wildlife, as did most of us - it is early days. The vision, driven by Millward Brown's Erik du Plessis at the request of SAMRA, to establish a benchmarking marketing research conference for Africa which will attract marketers and advertisers as well, is sound. Our industry lacks such thought leadership events as the run-of-the-mill conference companies out there increasingly dumb-down the industry with their sky-high prices and inexperienced and often irrelevant speaker line-ups. One hopes this initiative by SAMRA is built on in the coming years and is supported by the industry.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, Editor: editor@bizcommunity.com

    Consumers are irrational
[Louise Marsland] The marketing community has traditionally believed that consumers behave in a rational way in many product categories. But new thinking suggests that consumers often behave irrationally, making split-second decisions, using gut feel to determine whether or not they like something and whether or not to buy it.

HIV prevalence increasing amongst skilled employees
It appears from the results of joint AIDS research conducted by Markinor and the BMR, that HIV prevalence rates among the skilled, the employed and the affluent are higher than generally expected and are also increasing more rapidly than expected. However, current studies and models appear to be flawed and a reliable estimation model does need to be built to ensure more accurate HIV prevalence estimates for South Africa, the SAMRA conference heard last week.

Media planning is not just a numbers game
[Louise Marsland] Industry sage and media strategist, Gordon Muller, challenged media planning paradigms yesterday, 16 March, when he accused media planners of focusing too much on the mechanics of planning and playing a numbers game, rather than on the marketplace out there and qualitative campaigns which understood the "soul" of the medium being utilised.

The effectiveness of retail loyalty programmes
Retail loyalty programmes had an effect on a customer's relationship with the brand, but South Africa was way behind the rest of the world in loyalty programme membership, the annual SAMRA conference was told this week.

    How much advertising actually works?
[Louise Marsland] If a surgeon gave you only a 41% chance of survival as you were wheeled into the operating theatre, would you go ahead with your operation? Well, apparently only 41% of advertising actually works, according to Professor John Philip Jones of Syracuse University, New York, however, continuity is a key to long term advertising effectiveness.

    People matter in research
Marketers, advertisers and researchers commonly talk of "consumers", "respondents", "informants" and "customers". What is really meant is "people". So why do we use these terms? More to the point, what does the use of these terms imply? asked Neil Higgs, head of Research Surveys, at the SAMRA conference on Wednesday, 15 March 2006.

    Finding the wisdom in research
[Louise Marsland] Research consultant and industry guru, Brian McMillan, warned researchers that reliance on computer software and ease of access to numbers by the general populace, was blinding the industry and clients to the "wisdom" contained in true scientific research. McMillan was the opening speaker at the Southern African Marketing Research Association (SAMRA) 27th annual convention, near Brits, today, 15 March 2006.

No surprise that Herdbuoys dumps SAA account
[Chris Moerdyk] It has not been in the least bit surprising to hear that HerdBuoys McCann Erickson (HBME) has announced that it has severed its five year relationship with South African Airways. While the reasons have been diplomatically couched in the fairly typical adspeak commonly used when client and agency go through a divorce - things like "protecting commercial interests" etc - there is very little doubt that at the bottom of this schism is pure and simple human incompatibility.

The TBWA\Fusion creative team consists of Ryan Barkhuizen, Roger Gordon, Wilton Ackeer and Frederic Benistant, with Marco Grob as photographer.

    HerdBuoys McCann resigns SAA account
HerdBuoys McCann Erickson (HBME) has announced that it has, with immediate effect, severed its five year relationship with the national airline, South African Airways (SAA). Managing director, Ann Muthuma, said the decision by HBME to resign the SAA account was a difficult one but in the company's interest, adding that this would not result in shedding off manpower at the agency of more than 80 strong staff. "We took a business decision to resign the SAA account to protect our commercial interests," Muthuma said. "We are very proud of the work that we have undertaken for SAA over the years and our expertise in the airline category was greatly enhanced."

    Radio

Listeners from rural areas to make their voices heard
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Once "forgotten", "neglected" and marginalised", listeners from rural areas who tune to radio stations such as SAFM, RSG, CKI, Umhlobo Wenene, Thobela, Phalaphala, Munghana Lonene, Ligwalagwala, Motsweding, XKFM, Lesedi, Ukhozi, Lotus, and Ikwekwezi, will now be able to make their voices heard when the new SABC additions and changes are implemented next week.

    One good turn deserves another
The innovative radio New Year's Revolution Promotion from 94.7 Highveld Stereo and Emperors Palace, which offered the chance to win a new lifestyle worth R3 million, more than succeeded in its primary objectives of attracting listenership and promoting the casino's Winner Circle.

Shopping with Visa never goes out of fashion
As the main sponsor of the 2006 International Fashion Sale, Visa had to create a branding campaign in keeping with the fashion theme while also further entrenching its positioning as an everyday payment partner, as expressed in its payoff: "Visa. All you need". Grey Worldwide Design's solution was to create wrap-around panels for the exhibitors' booths that sported the image of a fashion-lover's "dream" cupboard, filled with everything from shoes to suits to stylish luggage. It was supported by till-point posters, advertising in the voucher booklet, and branding at the entrance and VIP area.
