While there is no doubt that the power cuts in the Cape and elsewhere in South Africa cause untold hardship to business and costs millions in lost product and brand damage to SA, such a crisis does demonstrate our ability to laugh in the face of adversity. It will be interesting to see how Eskom rebuilds its brand image after the slew of emails doing the rounds with graphic evidence of how people view the brand now - my favourite is of the power pylons 'playing' hop, skip and jump with their electricity wires; and of the new Eskom 'bumper sticker' with a play on the words 'Eskom', to read: 'Eksdom' (meaning 'I am dumb' in Afrikaans). This might be subversive brand fun in the face of frustration, but does a brand untold damage - it will need some clever brand re-engineering to reverse. This week sees the start of the annual SA Marketing Research Association (SAMRA) conference and well done to the organizers for seeing a gap for a world class international marketing conference in Southern Africa, and for trying to meet those expectations. We'll be bringing you all the latest marketing and research trends from SAMRA this week.

Enjoy! Louise Marsland, editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

Franchise business model promotes economic growth
While we constantly hear about the need for people to open their own businesses in order to overcome unemployment, business failure remains a major problem. The Franchise Association of Southern Africa (FASA) believes that the franchise model, by taking away the isolation of business-owners, overcomes lack of business skills.

Raymond Ackerman: The Ultimate Marketer turns 75
[Chris Moerdyk] As Pick 'n Pay founder, Raymond Ackerman celebrates his 75th birthday with a R4 million donation to the Red Cross Children's Hospital and an eight page broadsheet tribute in Business Report appropriately filled to the brim with typical Pick n' Pay ads, there cannot be many people in this country who do not hold him in the highest esteem.

TV channels can help improve advertising quality
[Chris Moerdyk] There is no doubt that the creative and marketing quality of South African television advertising just isn't what it used to be. The ad industry is not pulling nearly the same number of international accolades of past decades - there was a time that you could raise the subject of TV ads at a dinner party and be sure of at least an hour of animated discourse on everyone's favourite ads.

[Cheryl Hunter] With projections of growth to the business tourism sector, a sector currently contributing R20 billion to the country's economy, the effect of the recent power disruptions to business in the Western Cape is a legitimate concern.

    It's about trust - Freelanza
In the world of outsourcing and freelancing, what matters most is trust. When it's all done online, trust is the key word. A project outsourcer or service buyer wants to trust that the work will be delivered professionally and on time. A freelancer or service seller wants to trust that he or she will be paid the price quoted for the job.

    Global Media Monitoring Project launched
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Despite making up 52% of the world's population, women are still marginalised in the world's news media and represent only 21% of people featured in the news while men still dominate in almost every aspect of story topics, the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) says in its 2005 report launched in Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, on Tuesday March 7, 2006.

Gender violence and stereotypes: is the media part of the problem?
[Issa Sikiti da Silva] In a country where cultural, religious and patriarchal attitudes are deeply rooted in many men's minds, gender violence and stereotypes show no sign of abating despite a series of campaigns of activism, integrated approaches and many other strategies put in place. Government and women's rights organisations, which were hoping that the media would use its power and influence to help them fight the scourge, are now crying foul. "The media is sexist and insensitive," said Commissioner Teboho Maitse of the Commission for Gender Equality.
