| No Comment | Last week was a momentous one with the signing of the Transformation Charter for the marketing, advertising and communications industry. Its been a long hard road since parliament took this industry to task in 2001, and what with the turmoil in the advertising and marketing industries structures in the past few years, it is a victory indeed for democracy to have reached this point and congratulations to everyone involved whose hard work, passion and activist attitudes got us to this point. It's now up to the rest of us to make the process work. This is also my last column for a while as I head off on study leave to make a dent in my Masters thesis. Please continue sending news to editor@bizcommunity.com - our able support team will continue handling things. Please also note that Bizcommunity.com does close December 15, reopening on January 9, 2006! A fabulous festive season and a very happy new year to all!
Happy holidays! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

| Marketing | | Transformation Charter finally signed [Louise Marsland] The Advertising, marketing and communications industry Transformation Charter was signed by all the organisations party to it, setting in motion an intense process to speed up transformation in the industry: this sector should have begun already to meet targets for 2006 and 2009. It has until 2014 to be fully transformed in line with current Black Economic Empowerment policy.
The BEE Scorecard The main principles of the Scorecard are: BEE ownership targets... 25% by 2006 / 30% by 2009 / 45% by 2014; BEE management targets... 25% by 2006 / 30% by 2009 / 50% by 2014; Employment Equity... 25% by 2006 / 30% by 2009 / 60% by 2014. View the full BEE Scorecard and Transformation Charter on PDF...
Marketers lagging behind in transformation game [Chris Moerdyk] South Africa's marketers owe the ad industry a huge debt of gratitude for not only including them, but also giving them pole position naming rights, in the ground-breaking Marketing, Advertising and Communications BEE Charter. Frankly, the marketing industry's involvement in the drafting of the charter has been minimal.
It began with parliamentary hearings... [Louise Marsland] This industry was the first to be investigated publicly for racism in October 2001, when the Portfolio Committee on Communication, an organ of the National Assembly in Parliament, convened public hearings into the pace of transformation in the advertising and marketing value chain. After finding that the pace of transformation in the value chain was unacceptably slow, the Portfolio Committee on Communication directed that Government should facilitate a consultative process with all stakeholders with the view of finding a common blueprint for the transformation of the industry.
Transformation: it's all about values... The value statement adopted by the industry to ensure authenticity to the transformation process, included the values of: inclusivity and diversity; soul of the nation; respect and human dignity; business and people's needs; and responsible creativity.
