I go to a lot of conferences in the course of a year as a trend watcher, to report back to readers on new ideas, meet leading local and international gurus, lend media support and sometimes as a speaker. What struck me this past year was the lack of serious thought leadership and cutting edge trends coming out of 99% of the events, at least in this industry. Just blogging on Biz will reveal the need readers have for serious research and information on new trends and the first page of any Google search will reveal new innovations. So why aren't we documenting them and training up the rest of our industries at networking opportunities such as industry conferences? And it's not just up to the conference organizers - many key speakers booked don't pitch or send juniors to read off their boring PowerPoint slides - 'death by PowerPoint' is a disease for which there seems no cure these days! There seems to be a glut of mediocrity out there when it comes to presentations, even from some of our leading corporates and agencies in the field. Surely conferences and key speaking engagements are as much of a brand building opportunity as the millions you spend on your advertising?

Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com.

Soccer fever to cost SA companies R750 million in absenteeism
The 2010 Soccer World Cup will most likely cost companies an extra three quarters of a billion Rand in unplanned absenteeism abuse because at least one in three South African employees will take time off, which they will disguise as sick leave, to watch soccer. This is according to AIC Insurance CEO Johnny Johnson who says that these figures are based on similar results in England at the time of the last Soccer World Cup.

Creatives need to take stock, says marketer
[Louise Marsland] Advertising agencies need to take a time out from international awards and global ambitions to "recalibrate" as they were being 'stuffed up creatively', said Greg Garden, Nedbank marketing director, speaking at Tony Koenderman's Advertising Brainstorm 'Where now Creativity?' in Johannesburg, Wednesday, 2 November 2005.

    Whipping marketing into shape
Marketing organizations are a "black hole" that is frequently overlooked in corporate audits. This oversight can hurt a company's compliance efforts. The problem arises from marketing's lack of documented processes, says Chetan Saiya, founder, chairman and CEO of Assetlink, an international provider of marketing operations management solutions based in the US.

    Of big ideas and inspiration
[Louise Marsland] So what's up with the ad industry today? Is it the absence of 'the big idea', the sacrifice of creativity for awards, just plain "kak" (to quote Mike Schalit), or a dangerous split with reality according to a senior marketer? At Tony Koenderman's Advertising Brainstorm 'Where now Creativity?', held in Johannesburg yesterday, 2 November 2005, leading creatives and a handful of marketers debated the issue.

    Branding that stinks
[Naseem Javed] The smell of armpits, dirty laundry and soiled diapers are all now highly sought-after scents, as companies, pursuing 'smelly-branding' have lined up exclusive rights to aromas which they can use to bring odour to their lifeless products... Like peachy-smelly-lingerie or chocolate-smelly-jocks and so on. There are some not so pungent smells, like apples, bananas and oranges, but all the attempts for exclusive use have failed.
