It's the sweaty palms and wild-eyed look that is the marker. And it just takes one little press release. Just one. It lands there, innocently, in my inbox, and look, the PRO has even been so kind as to send only low res pix so as not to bomb my mail. So thoughtful. Rare too. But it still gets to one... that first press release proclaiming the joys of Christmas...justaroundthecornersogearupforitnowohjoytralala... because you just know that those special Christmas mall carols are going to start bombarding you from this weekend, the desperate round of 'let's see if we can outdo the next client this year' Christmas parties start... I've got Christmas hotdogs by the pool at some client this week... really! (Probably rather more appropriate for this sweltering Jo'burg summer too). Anyway, why should I be the only one caught off guard and dreading all that Christmas shopping for that large family, extended and proxies... It's November next week and there's only about SIX WEEKS until everyone packs up on leave and heads off on their festive season holidays. Only six weeks to try cram in all your work, try finally catch up on your email... and SHOP! One toy company has compiled a handy list of top toys to aid and abett (see below). I'm putting the 'light up wand' and dancerella mat thingy on my Christmas wishlist, although Spiderman's Mega Blast Web Shooter sounds kinda cool too!

Good luck! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@biz-community.com

OpenAd.net presents new opportunities for SA talent
OpenAd.net, the global ideas stock, based in Switzerland and with offices in London, Mumbai and Ljubljana (Slovenia), put its weight behind South African creativity by sponsoring the print craft category at the recent Loerie Awards.
From the superbowl to the St Michaels beach
While the tent issue almost resulted in Loeries 2005, Margate, becoming 'unplugged', the actual event company, Unplugged, put on two nights of raucous entertainment with a true local flavour of the kind never seen before at Loeries, except maybe at the after parties.

    Ogilvy gets real
Real South African ads for real South African brands, aimed at real South African people. That's what Ogilvy South Africa does best, it says, and that's what the agency believes it proved through its outstanding performance at this year's Loerie Awards. In total, the agency brought home over 59 trophies.
    Clever Flashwork catches the bird
A mix of extensive 3D animation and innovative Flash saw Ripe returning from Margate with a Gold Loerie in the Interactive Website category, and a bronze for Heavy Media. Both awards were for the 2004 Nashua / SASI Swimwear project.
    Loeries stick like Gloo
Gloo digital design company was the leading digital winner at this year's Loerie Awards coming away with a Gold, a Silver and three Bronzes. The accolades were achieved across a broad range of disciplines namely, design, interactive, CD Rom, online software development and heavy media.
    A Loerie for animation
The 2005 Loerie Award ceremony was the first time animation hotshop Masters & Savant entered the awards and they received five nominations for outstanding work and a silver Loerie for their Metro FM "Boom Box" campaign.
The flight of the Cape Loeries
In a strange "twis" of events this week, it came to light that King James RSVP's Gold Loerie landed in Cape Town with Daddy buy me a pony and that Daddy buy me a pony's Gold Loerie ended up with King James. Both Cape Town agencies recently travelled to Margate to receive Gold Loeries for their creative work.
So... whinging aside, was Loeries a success?
[Louise Marsland] The dust has settled over Margate as the circus tent is packed away, Loeries having flown the coop for another year. But the feathers are still flying as debate gathers momentum on whether the new judging format and the radical move to Margate was a success. There's a lot of griping about loos and seating, but let's not forget the big picture vision for The Loerie Awards and the intention behind the new judging and move to Margate.
Do you know Who I Am?
[Louise Marsland] Next time you pack your bucket and spade for Margate, leave your attitude at home, relax and have a jol. That's the message from the locals who were confronted by a few individuals with ego issues, using language your client would never approve in an ad and with a swaggering: "Do You Know Who I Am?!"
    What agencies fear most...
Having walked away with the majority of the 2005 Loerie Awards, including 1 Grand Prix Award, 6 Golden Loeries, 24 Silver Loeries, and 35 Bronze Loeries, TBWA \ were the clear leaders amongst the agencies in this years awards claiming once again the top spot among South Africa's creative ranks. The Grand Prix Award for Print Advertising for Fear \ Horror \ Terror "What insects fear the most" - a consumer newspaper advertisement created for Adcock Ingram by Paul Warner (Creative Director), Adam Weber (Art Director) and Hennie Stander (Copy Writer), was one of the highlights for the TBWA \ who ended the weekend on top of the points table with a total of 5550 points, far ahead of the second placed agency who accumulated 4150 points.
    Net#work out punches its weight
Only three agencies dominated the Loeries this year, but it was the 'David' among the two 'Goliaths' that walked off with the only Grand Prix to be dished out in the television and cinema category. Overall, medium sized agency Net#work BBDO achieved the second largest number of awards across the broadest spectrum of clients (over 75%) and media disciplines. The agency also won significantly more awards to its revenue ratio and size than any of its competitors.
SABC Audience Services shine at the Loeries
TBWA Hunt Lascaris, Egg Films, Masters & Savant and Net#work BBDO were awarded for commercials, cinematography, writing, campaigns and art direction done on behalf of SABC Audiences Services, Good Hope FM, Metro and RSG. "The Loerie Awards not only creates brand awareness, but it is generally accepted that award winning advertising achieves bottom-line results," says Mark Jakins, CE: Commercial Enterprises of the SABC.
Terraplane flies home with 9 Loeries
Terraplane raked in 1 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze birds at the Loeries this year, had a surf lesson and a great party to boot.

    Marketing
Business processes: meeting the marketing challenge
[Alan Haefele] Marketing departments are traditionally the realm of freewheeling creative types, thriving on caffeine and a certain amount of chaos. Business process improvements, on the other hand, are all about structure, predictability and automation - fine for the meticulous types in finance departments or production, but anathema to the marketers. That, at any rate, is the conventional wisdom; but taking business process improvements to marketing's final frontier can have liberating results.

    New trends in party planning
It's that time of year again and many businesses will be hosting functions to thank staff for their hard work throughout the year and to celebrate their successes with clients. Deciding what will be the most suitable for a year-end function can be difficult, so catering company Chefettes has positioned itself to assist and advise clients.

    Consumer confidence drops
Results of the MasterIndex survey of Consumer Confidence for the second half of 2005 have revealed a decrease of nearly 15% in six months in overall South African consumer confidence. This is the first drop in South African consumer confidence since the MasterIndex survey began in early 2004.

Will the real marketing industry please stand up?
[Louise Marsland] The untimely demise of the Marketing Federation of Southern African has a host of potential players crawling out of the woodwork. What is worse, is that instead of talking to each other, the industry is jockeying for power in the media. This is the best strategy to regroup that our key marketers can come up with?

    Brand distinction through social leadership
[Shereen Amos] Nowadays products, services and even business models can be easily and rapidly copied. What competitors cannot do is copy a company's view of the world. And it is through this distinctive world view that brands and businesses can distinguish themselves from their rivals. Because customers do not just buy from companies anymore, they buy into them.

    YOU the brand
[Julie Newton] Everyone knows Michael Jackson's famous song 'Man in the Mirror' where he advocates looking at yourself to make the world a better place. Public Relations

    Taking PR back to basics
[Ramotena Mabote] The media exists for one simple reason: to disseminate information. It does not matter what shape this takes, whether it is straightforward news, an exposé, an interview, or even reproduction of old work, all that the media do is to disseminate information.
