This time next week, the Loeries post mortem will have begun and we'll know if the most ambitious event undertaken by this industry, has been a considered success. Because The Loerie Awards are more than just awards for the creative industry. They have always been a barometer of the health of the industry, a premier networking event, a showcase. This time round though, there is a lot more at stake than just a party. The economic implications for the Kwazulu-Natal South Coast region known as the Hibiscus Coast, including Margate, are far reaching for a community which has thrown its weight behind the Loeries with huge enthusiasm. But no awards event this ambitious is without a hitch, and by all accounts the venue is stunning with a host of surprises and a party menu of note for the celebration of creative excellence - despite the fact that bad weather has forced the relocation of the awards tent from Margate beach by about 6km to a grassy knoll in next door St Michaels. The Bizcommunity.com team will be there in full force with special daily reports and all the winners. Look out for our photographer and video crew and please send us your pix from Margate to: gallery@bizcommunity.com. There are still advertising opportunities as well, contact sales@bizommunity.com. All comments to: editor@bizcommunity.com. Let's get this show on the road already!

See you on the beach! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@biz-community.com

  • The Loerie Awards 2005        Margate, 15 & 16 October 2005

Loerie venue latest: life's a beach...
[Louise Marsland] A week of bad weather has forced a venue change for the actual Loerie Awards ceremonies this weekend as bad weather made the chosen venue on Margate beach unsafe. The actual awards venue in Margate has been the worst kept secret in the industry to date: a circus tent on Margate beach. But no need to panic, says the Loerie Awards event company, Unplugged, the tent has been moved a few kilometres down Margate beach to St-Michaels-on-Sea, which "is even more beautiful and was Plan B anyway". Everything else remains the same... and the weather is predicted to clear in time as up to 3000 people head to Margate for Loeries this weekend, 15 - 16 October 2005.

Loeries judge praises direct category entries
[Nici Stathacopoulos] Overall, the standard of entries into the Loeries 2005 Direct Categories was high: of the 293 entries, there were 176 finalists - a whopping 60.1%. This indicates that the jury felt strongly that most of the work entered was worthy of a mention and should encourage all marketers to embark on well thought out, creatively excellent campaigns that will engender a response.

    Loerie finalists announced
The Loerie Awards 2005 finalists have been announced and there are over 1200 this year. Agency groups topping the finalist lists - with over 100 finalists each - include: Ogilvy South Africa, TBWA/Hunt/Lascaris, Net#work BBDO, and FCB South Africa. All-in-all, over 100 entrants made it on to the finalist list.

    Loeries: booking confirmations
With just four days left to go, the Loeries Committee has assured those agencies that have not yet had booking confirmations, that everything will be done in time. A rush of last minute bookings after the finalists lists were released has further stretched resources as rekindled interest in the Loeries reaches unprecedented levels. Both the awards ceremonies are at maximum capacity according to the event organisers, Unplugged, seating 2000 on each night: Saturday 15 October and Sunday, 16 October. There is a waiting list for the Sunday night awards and for the special Kulula.com flights that were laid on by the Loeries Committee.

[Louise Marsland] The Services SETA is the first industry stakeholder that has stepped up to encourage the marketing industry to leave the past behind and find a new vehicle for its aspirations - or risk being sidelined by business and Government.
