Three strikes and they're out? - 21 Jul 2014

By Shan Radcliffe, Group Head - Retail (@Biz_Retail)

This must be the only country with a 'Strike Season' - with strikes too often being accompanied by intimidation, violence (including murder) and destruction of property.

The automotive industry is no stranger to strikes, but now David Furlonger asks whether it's all not becoming a dangerous gamble for the SA motor industry? Unions seem convinced that multinational motor companies are too deeply embedded in SA to walk away. But are they? Might they not get to a stage where they decide investing in SA has simply become too risky?

John Loos says there is no sustainable recovery in retail yet, which is bad news for retailers, manufacturers and indeed, all of us.

Fact of life...we get ill, we require medication - which is expensive enough as it is...which is why the National Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (NAPM) has called for the elimination of VAT on life-saving medicines.

Finally, Danette Breitenbach reports on the arrival of Consumer Science in SA - Mondelez International has opened a new Sensory Laboratory in South Africa - the first in the EEMEA region.
