Malawi campaign combines safety with high impact
Lilongwe, Blantyre - Clear Channel Outdoor has been awarded the rights to build four pedestrian bridges in Malawi’s largest cities. These multi-functional bridges, funded by Clear Channel Outdoor, are designed to curb the high number of road accidents involving heavy pedestrian traffic and vehicles in both Lilongwe and Blantyre. They have also been designed to make a statement as community landmarks that are colourful and informative.
The structures, which were officially opened on 9 May, have taken the company four months to construct. Their siting, which has been carefully chosen so that they are built where they are most needed, means that they are placed across roads in areas of high-volume traffic around schools in Blantyre, and city access areas in Lilongwe.
Shaun Swaney, the company’s general manager in Malawi says: “It is no surprise that Africa has the highest road-traffic death rate in the world. Our pedestrian bridges will provide the thousands of Malawians who walk from place to place along the roads a safe passage across chaotic arterials. We are also, as a result of these bridges, able to offer key branding and high-impact advertising opportunities to advertisers”.
Clear Channel Independent is a partnership in Africa held in equal proportion between Clear Channel Outdoor (NYSE:CCO) and Independent News and Media PLC. The company, which is Africa’s largest billboard advertising company commanding approximately 50% of the South African billboard market according to AD Index, operates in a further 12 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
