Delta Air Lines orders 40 Airbus jets
Delta said the new aircraft, to be delivered between 2015 and 2017, are part its plans to renew the fleet and focus on enhancing profitability and keeping a close rein on capacity.
"This Airbus agreement is an opportunistic fleet transaction for Delta in which it acquires economically efficient, proven-technology aircraft," Richard Anderson, Delta's chief executive, said in a statement.
"These A330s and A321s will provide tremendous flexibility for Delta to manage its capacity over the next five years while further improving the flight experience for customers and returns for shareholders," he added.
The deal is valued at about US$5.6bn.
