The BMW X5M and X6M Competition unveiled

After more than 100 days since attending an actual motor launch, heading out to Zwartkops raceway to test drive the BMW X5M Competition and X6 M Competition models was almost surreal. It was a sense of 'déjà vu' as far as motoring launches were concerned. Judging by the feedback from other motoring journalists present, it was one of the most enjoyable 'real' experiences of recent times.

This might be the third generation of the X5M and X6M Competition models, but the appeal to sit in the cockpit and track and road test these Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV’s) was certainly evident amongst those in attendance.

Third Generation

M for Motorsport so what better place to put these beauties through their paces other than Zwartkops raceway. The two flagships, the new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) BMW X5 M Competition and the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), the new BMW X6 M Competition, are the third generation of the high-performance BMW M models in the luxury SAV and SAC segments. The overall concept reprises the classical M blueprint for dynamics, agility and precision, combining the versatility, extrovert design and modern luxury BMW X models have become renowned for.

Significant increase in power

Both powerhouses possess a high-revving 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, resulting in a power increase over their respective predecessors of 37 kW for both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition. This sees both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition boasting 460 kW of power (at 6,000 rpm) and a maximum torque of 750 Nm between 1800 – 5600 rpm. Now, this is really making a ‘powerful’ statement in terms of speed.

Versatile power delivery is effortless, thanks in part to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive all‑wheel-drive system with rear-biased setup, which can be adjusted in 4WD / 4WD Sport modes. The Sports exhaust system delivers an emotionally stirring soundtrack.

High class performance

Both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds - up to 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors. M light-alloy wheels in a 21‑inch format at the front axle and 22-inch at the rear are fitted as standard for both models. Outstanding stopping power is provided by M compound, while the integrated braking system enables the individual configuration of pedal feel under braking.

Loaded with tech and good looks

An extensive package of measures increases the stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings, aided by model-specific chassis technology with bespoke kinematic properties.

When it comes to the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition, an extrovert body design represents visual expression. Familiar SAV and SAC proportions combine with signature M features, optimising cooling air supply and aerodynamics. Large air intakes, that signature BMW kidney grille with double bars, M gills on the front side panels, a roof/rear spoiler, rear apron with diffuser elements and an exhaust system with two sets of twin tailpipes complete the powerhouses.

Design elements

For the first time, a special BMW Individual paint finish is now available for BMW X models, further highlighting the vehicles’ striking aesthetics. An exclusive, luxurious interior offers a raised seating position, creating a majestic M feeling. A generous feeling of space, high degree of variability, M‑specific cockpit design and BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific readouts are fitted as standard.

Drivers are afforded the choice of ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings. Standard specification includes BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the navigation system and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and the Parking Assistant. A large selection of driver assistance systems and BMW Laser light are available as options.

Verdict

South Africa has a rich history with BMW M vehicles together with a huge following of BMW aficionados. Driving these SAV’s around the Zwartkops Raceway and then in Sports mode on tarred roads was an unforgettable experience in itself. It is just amazing the speed generated from standstill to around greater than 260kmph. It just sticks to the track and not did I feel that my safety was being comprised, especially around braking and the various turns around Zwartkops. Exhilarating indeed. And to think that these SAV’s, that weigh up to two and a half tons, can stop dead-still inside 33 metres, from speeds in excess of 260kmph.

These SAV’s are technology loaded. The ride is more than comfortable and it certainly ticks all the boxes for a track, road and sport modes. After reaching speeds in excess of 260kmph, my heart was still racing. And when you walk around the vehicles after that, all you hear is the exhaust crackle. To attest to local customers’ insatiable appetite for “The most powerful letter in the world”, the South African market sold the third most M cars in the world, compared to overall sales figures.
