Users embrace Transnet's cargo tracking app

The public sector appears to be quickly embracing technology released by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) as a means of tracking goods in South African ports.

TPT, the port operations division of state-owned logistics group Transnet, launched an app to help international traders - anyone from small furniture importers to a large manganese supplier - to keep track of cargo as it moves through TPT facilities, in real time.

The company is responsible for moving vehicles and parts, containers, agricultural produce, minerals, and bulk cargo.

The move comes as more organisations launch apps that give them the ability to interact directly with their customers and improve services.

TPT's app follows the Johannesburg Roads Agency's application, which indentifies road surface problems like potholes and missing manhole covers. TPT says its app grants the user instant access to information that includes live berthing plans and important terminal updates across its network of 16 terminals.

According to TPT's Commercial and Planning General Manager Nombuso Afolayan says the app helps traders improve their planning and make decisions with real-time information at their disposal. Such information will enable shipping lines to make decisions like reducing their speed to save fuel.
