Chrysler says cooperating in US probe of engine fires
"Chrysler Group is aware of a small number of incidents involving engine compartment fires in 2010 Jeep Wrangler vehicles," the company, controlled by Italian auto giant Fiat, said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Vehicle fires are very complex and can occur for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with the vehicle itself," including "poor maintenance, improper vehicle use or installation of aftermarket equipment," it said.
"The 2010 Jeep Wrangler meets or exceeds all applicable federal safety standards and has an excellent safety record." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened the investigation on March 28 after eight reports of engine fires.
"Seven of the eight complainants allege the fire or symptoms of the impending fire began while driving," it said in a statement on its website. "A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency,
and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect."
The company has sold more than 94,000 of the vehicles in question. Last week Chrysler announced the recall of some 1,700 2012 Jeep Patriot 4x4's sold in the United States over a fuel valve problem.
