Versatile and smart new Vito

Mercedes-Benz Vito has unwrapped its latest Vito range consisting of 10 choices varying from classy hotel shuttles and people carriers to hard-core workhorse panel vans with a wide choice of diesel or petrol engines, front- or rear-wheel drive, automatic or manual transmissions and specification levels.
Versatile and smart new Vito

The German manufacturer says this versatile range lifts the bar for the mid-size van segment in terms of choice, versatility and maintenance costs (although it is quite pricey when compared to the Chrysler Grand Voyager, VW Kombi, Ford Tourneo and Hyundai H-1). The prices of the new Vito range from R372,780 to R744,386 and with a wide choice of optional extras on offer which, although attractive, could add considerably to the initial cost of purchase.

Setting new standards

As to be expected from the three-pointed star brand, the Vito sets new standards for ride quality, roadholding, cabin functionality, safety and the overall good finish of its cabin - a combination which is superior to anything else in this class. Although typically boxy in shape, the German white coats have also come up with a design that offers low wind resistance and reduces fuel consumption.

I drove three different models at the media introduction in Gauteng which included stretches of good and bad roads and even a spell on the skid pan at Swartkops Raceway where the Vito impressed with good handling and roadholding.

Versatile and smart new Vito

The front-wheel drive Vito has a transverse-mounted, compact four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.6-litres and does duty in the Vito 111 CDI with 84kW.

High performance needs

In cases where demands on performance are higher (such as trailer towing), probably a better choice would be the rear-wheel drive, four-cylinder engine with a 2.2-litre displacement. It is available at three power output levels: the Vito 114 CDI with 100kW; the Vito 116 CDI with 120kW, and the Vito 119 BlueTEC that poduces 140kW.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission (with torque converter) is optional for the Vito 114 CDI and Vito 116 CDI and standard equipment on the Vito 119 CDI. This automatic transmission with torque converter and seven gears is also a first in the world of vans.

The Vito BlueEFFICIENCY is exceptionally economical when it comes to fuel use. This package is available for the new Vito with rear-wheel drive and is standard on the 116 and 119 Vito Tourers with automatic transmission. The certified figure of 5.7-litres per 100 kilometres for the Vito 116 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is unmatched in this vehicle category.

Versatile and smart new Vito

The new Vito has been given added appeal with service intervals (for both petrol and diesel engines) of up to 40,000km or two years. The service plan for all the new models has also been extended with the introduction of an unprecedented five-year /120,000 km service plan.
