    FAW‚ one of China's leading global manufacturers of passenger cars‚ trucks and buses is building a plant at Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth.
    FAW invests R600m in South Africa

    The initial investment and planned expansions will cost more than R600m and will see more than 1‚000 jobs being created during the building phase. The facility is due to be completed by December and it will have an initial annual output of 5‚000 trucks a year with passenger cars and light commercial vehicles going into production after that.

    "We decided to make this investment because of the significant opportunities that the Eastern Cape‚ in specific the Coega Industrial Development Zone‚ has for FAW's commercial and passenger vehicles in South Africa and Africa‚" said Richard Leiter‚ managing director‚ FAW South Africa.

    Currently the FAW South Africa production base‚ which is managed by FAW Africa Investment Co‚ is FAW's first‚ large-scale overseas business in recent years. The investment‚ which is supported by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality‚ will see a state of the art factory and assembly plant‚ being built in two phases.

    The roll-out for the first phase includes reorganisation of the FAW South Africa's company structure‚ building an assembly plant in Coega‚ establishing a dealership and spare parts warehouse in Johannesburg‚ as well as building up a distribution centre. The construction of phase one started in the first quarter of this year and normal production is due to start in April next year.

    The second phase will start in 2015 and will increase production to allow the company to produce 30‚000 passenger vehicles a year‚ for the southern and eastern African markets.

    FAW has its head office‚ factory and main branch in Isando‚ Johannesburg‚ with two other branches in Cape Town and Durban‚ a total footprint of 17 sales dealers and 9 service dealers across southern Africa exists and more than R100m in spare parts are held by the company at any given time.
