Fake taxis being sold for R15 000
Police have uncovered a vehicle chop-shop that is manufacturing fake mini-bus taxis and selling these for as little as R15 000 each according to an article just published in Sowetan.
It says the chop-shop runs like a modern production system with a constant flow of parts to an assembly-line operation and with agents selling the illegal vehicles to willing buyers throughout the country.
The vehicles are made from parts that have been stripped from stolen taxis. The latest chop-shop was found at the Nancefield hostel in Soweto after two others, one at Merafe and another in Mapetla were discovered two weeks ago.
Sowetan says that mechanics are believed to be at the centre of the illicit operations but taxi associations have alleged that the police are also involved.
