Motor trade sales up 12.7%

Motor trade sales rose by 12.7% year on year (y/y) in February 2012 to R37 billion compared with an upwardly revised 11.2% (11.0%) y/y increase in January 2012 to R35.5 billion and a 13.9% gain in 2011 to R421.2 billion, Statistics South Africa reported on Thursday (19 April 2012).

The highest y/y growth rate in February was recorded for fuel sales (19.9%), followed by new vehicle sales (14.8%) and sales of accessories (12.4%).

Motor trade sales for the three months ended February 2012 increased by 10.6% compared with the three months ended February 2011.

In February 2012 seasonally adjusted motor trade sales increased by 1.1% month on month (m/m), following monthly changes of 5.0% in January 2012 and -3.5% in December 2011.

Seasonally adjusted motor trade sales for the three months ended February 2012 increased by 0.8% compared with the three months ended November 2011.
