The locomotive's official unveiling took place at an event held at Transnet Rail Engineering's facilities in Pretoria's Koedoespoort, says the GCIS. It is the 42nd locomotive delivered by GM and is the most advanced diesel electric locomotive ever built in South Africa. According to the contract, 133 locomotives are to be assembled locally at Transnet Rail Engineering's site in South Africa.
43 locomotives will be deployed in the Phalaborwa-Richards Bay corridor, 30 in the Sishen-Saldanha iron-ore corridor, 32 in the Witbank-Nelspruit-Komatipoort line and the remaining 28 will transport coal to Eskom power stations, the GCIS reports.
