Oman buys jets worth £2.5bn from BAE

MUSCAT, OMAN: British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Oman on Friday (21 December) as Britain's defence giant BAE Systems announced a £2.5bn deal to supply fighter planes and trainer jets to the sultanate.

Cameron "has arrived for a visit to the sultanate that will last a few hours in which he will meet Sultan Qaboos," Oman's official ONA news agency reported without giving details.

On Thursday (20 December), Cameron paid a pre-Christmas visit to British troops serving in Afghanistan, insisting that the "high price" paid by servicemen had been worthwhile, his office said.

On his way home as he arrived in Oman, which has close economic and military ties with Britain, BAE Systems announced in London that it has sealed a multi-billion pound fighter jets deal with Muscat.

"BAE Systems will supply 12 Typhoon and 8 Hawk aircraft, with a value of £2.5bn, to the Royal Air Force of Oman," the London-listed company said in a statement.

Oman is the seventh nation in the world, and only the second in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia, to operate the Typhoon.
