Nigeria's advertising czar

“People say I'm very aggressive. I have no apologies” If there were an English thesaurus with a Nigerian flavour, Biodun Shobanjo's name would be there: listed as the only synonym, under the entry, “advertising.”

Co-founder of Insight Grey, Nigeria's biggest advertising agency, Shobanjo is the best known of a trio of bright professionals who planted a tiny firm and then grew it into a conglomerate of seven thousand staff within twenty-five years. That feat earned Shobanjo, in particular, the appellation by which he is known within and outside the industry, “Father of Nigerian Advertising”.

But the interview had hardly started when this dapper, smooth talking gentleman threw this tag into the bin. “I think, that is carrying it a bit too far,” Shobanjo says of the appellation during an interview that was as much a journey into his own odyssey as it was the story of Nigeria's most successful advertising story. “I don't think so. I don't think so at all,” he says, adding the second half of the statement for emphasis.
