Nicholas Preston[Nicholas Preston] As a general rule, litigants are entitled to legal representation at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) arbitrations unless the issue relates to an alleged unfair dismissal and that the reason for the dismissal relates to the employees alleged misconduct or incapacity.

The role of a state-owned airline

Rob Baker[Rob Baker] Whilst government has a clear role in delivering essential services to the needy, you won't find many of the millions of suffering South Africans at airports or on flights. Quite the opposite in fact, as once you've become a "jetsetter" you've arrived at a space unavailable to the poor. So, why are government involved in the airline industry?

SA Express - still trying to figure out its net asset value
[Rob Baker] The most telling bit of information released about SA Express last week, was on page 165 of the Annual Report of the Department of Public Enterprises: "No impairment for the current year for South African Express (SAX) has been provided as the current year net asset value is not available." Impairments are changes in the value of an asset, which are obviously impossible to specify if one does not know what the value of the asset was at the start and end of the period.

Caffeluxe - two-week challenge
[Jordan Scott] I'm not sure whether it is a blessing or a curse, but I have never been one to need my "daily fix" of coffee. So when invited to do a taste test with Caffeluxe, I wasn't incredibly optimistic about my chances of getting anything right.

There will be blood
[Eugene Yiga] The last time that playwright Louis Viljoen and director Greg Karvellas teamed up with actors Mark Elderkin and Nicholas Pauling, the result was the award-winning Champ. Now it looks like they've got another hit on their hands in The Frontiersmen, a dark tale of sex, drugs, and property development.

Skunk Anansie, enough to make a grown man cry
[Sindy Peters] How cold was it at Rocking the Daisies this year?! Bloody hell! I wouldn't have blamed anyone for forsaking their Ocsober oaths just to keep their blood circulating. But forget the weather, Seed Experiences are clearly in the lead for hosting the best outdoor festival of 2013.

Transformation requires more than ticking boxes

Nonkululeko Gobodo[Nonkululeko Gobodo] There is a gap between transformation and capability in South Africa - although we are doing a lot right in this area, with our employment equity laws, we still need a lot more to be done to capacitate the state. The public sector takes it very seriously, but I think the private sector is lagging behind.

Why Numsa is calling BMW's bluff

Chris Moerdyk[Chris Moerdyk] Most business people in South Africa with even the slightest capitalist leanings would have been horrified at the sheer arrogance of the National Union of Metal Workers (Numsa) response to BMW's announcement that it might reconsider further investment in South Africa due to loss of production through labour unrest.
