The Grand Affair

The Grand Affair
[Riccardo Spagni] I recently was told that I like nice stuff. Apparently this is a problem if I ever go to live in a third-world village in a country like, I don't know, South Africa. Whilst both of these points may be true, there is no doubt that The Grand is on my list of "nice stuff" that I like. It is like the bachelor pad of some recently divorced Russian billionaire; it manages to ooze class and substance whilst still feeling surprisingly modern.

The reason they're not coming is flat
[Daryl Ilbury] The real reason that people aren't coming to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in their droves can be found in a box, and, yes, it is flat.

Ad agencies getting closer to the coalface
[Chris Moerdyk] It comes as no surprise that the recently released State of Marketing report by the global Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council suggests that "agencies will take a back seat as the ‘client-side'" starts to deploy new marketing performance platforms and build its own internal competencies for improving go-to-market effectiveness and accountability.

Business leaders upbeat about SA - survey

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] Despite the shadows of violent crime, corruption, chronic strikes, ‘racial tensions' and ‘street politics' blurring South Africa's business skies, most business leaders (58%) remain upbeat about the country's business scene, according to a BDFM-Avusa Media survey released yesterday, Thursday, 22 April 2010, at Montecasino in Johannesburg.

SA media, police smoke peace pipe

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] South African editors, various media representatives, crime reporters and senior police managers, including police boss Bheki Cele, met yesterday, Tuesday, 20 April 2010, in Johannesburg to discuss what some analysts have described as ‘police harassment' of journalists and police's ‘unjustified hostility' towards the media.

More 2010 scare stories to come between exploding boobs, bloodbaths?
[Gill Moodie] Cape Town geologist Dr Chris Hartnady is an unlikely person to turn up in a front-page story of a national British tabloid but he did just that - much to his own surprise. Earlier this month Hartnady, a former UCT professor who is now the research and technical director of geoscience consultancy Umvoto Africa, was “quoted” in the Daily Star tabloid as saying an earthquake could hit South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Selling a country of contradictions

Selling a country of contradictions
[Mandy de Waal] South Africa's going to have to work harder than ever to sell itself. The rude awakening is that there is no rainbow nation. The huge socio-economic divide, together with political incompetence and a lack of service delivery, has proved a powder keg for sparks that too easily inflame racial tension. It will take courageous, authentic and real marketers to remind us of who we once were, and what we can become. [video]

Do journalists despise most media conferences?

Do journalists despise most media conferences?
[Thabani Khumalo] After the incident involving ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema and BBC reporter Jonah Fisher, I asked myself a few questions about media conferences. Do newsmakers understand the reasons for calling a news conference? Is the concept of the news conference vulnerable to abuse by either newsmakers or journalists?

STOMPing the Artscape

STOMPing the Artscape
[Ruth Cooper] Never has sweeping, mopping and cleaning dishes looked so much fun to me. If I had the skills of the STOMP crew, and a whole group of skilled buddies to clean with, I think I would have the cleanest flat ever. Using everyday items such as brooms, kitchen sinks and plastic bags, the cast of STOMP creates wonderful musical and theatrical dance numbers that are so complex, rhythmic and catchy that one can't quite believe that ordinary objects like sweeping brooms or rustling newspapers are creating them.

Theresa Mallinson[Theresa Mallinson] It's been a long road from Mowbray Kaap. But now that Freshlyground is singing the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem (with Shakira), it could just hit the big time. And maybe local artists will stop complaining about their lack of opportunities during the world cup.

Emphasising interactive kiosks' role in retail sector

Issa Sikiti da Silva[Issa Sikiti da Silva] There are just over 1000 interactive kiosks in South Africa's retail sector, compared to between 50 000 and 100 000 in the US where they were introduced some 15-20 years ago, it was revealed last week. Therefore, a conference aimed at emphasising the vital role of interactive kiosks is due to take place in Johannesburg this year.
