I've seen most of my favourite rock stars in concert as they've visited sunny SA over the past decade or so, but rarely in my life have I seen the upwell of emotion that was present at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday as 3200 women, all dressed to impress, screamed for Oprah Winfrey as she entered a plainly dramatic stage, and proceeded to hold us captive for three hours - her only prop a microphone and her awesome personality. The floor vibrated under our feet as Oprah arrived, dressed in a simple green dress. Whatever you may think of her pop-psychology, I don't believe anyone who has ever met her or heard her speak, will walk away untouched. All I can say is WOW and well done to our publishing icon Jane Raphaely, O editor, Kgomotso Matsunyane and the Associated Magazines team for managing to get a window in Ms Winfrey's schedule to present her 'Live Your Best Life' road show here. And for those who didn't get a ticket in time to this sold out event - she has promised to come back, and I for one will be first in line to buy tickets!

Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

Marketers must use science and not fuzzy maths
[Gary Cokins ] Budget expenditures for marketing should be subject to the same intense examination by the COO and CFO as any other spending programme and ROI on marketing must be better projected - not with fuzzy mathematics, but by using modern analytical techniques, fact-based logic and financial data.

    Brandwagon 'derailed' at brand awards
[Louise Marsland] It was supposed to be a classy celebration of South Africa's greatest brands as measured by globally accepted standards, but the boycott of the Marketing Federation of South Africa's Brand Excellence Awards last night by two of South Africa's Top 10 brands: Vodacom and Pick 'n Pay, may have stirred up more of a hornet's nest than the MFSA, which last night celebrated its first 100 days of getting the maligned organisation back on track, would like right now.

Tomorrow's business leaders are today's marketers
[Cheryl Hunter ] The experts have shown remarkable consensus on one issue: it's time for marketers to take the reins and lead business into the future. Speaking at the second day of the Marketing Federation of SA's (MFSA) Winter School of Marketing Excellence 2005, in Sandton, both local and international speakers concurred on this one vital point.

How to reach the consumer of the future
[Cheryl Hunter ] Marketers gathered at the MFSA's Winter School of Marketing Excellence at the Sandton Sun in Sandton yesterday, 6 June 2005, were reminded that marketing hasn't changed, but the consumer has, and the industry needs to go back to the drawing board to revisit marketing fundamentals to reach the consumer of the future.

The future of marketing is about leadership
[Cheryl Hunter ] The future of marketing lies not in marketing management but in marketing leadership, ABSA marketing and communication group executive Brendan O'Donnell told the Marketing Federation of SA's (MFSA) Winter School of Marketing Excellence 2005 yesterday, 6 June 2005, at the Sandton Sun in Gauteng.

    Retrieving your customer information
[Kate Elphick] Businesses are facing more sophisticated competition in the market every day and the race is on to constantly deliver higher levels of customer service, but better customer service requires a greater insight into customers' preferences and behaviours as a sound basis to develop a strategy for retaining customers and "incentivising" those customers not suited to the business, to switch to the competition.

The one P to rule them all

    Joke of the day
A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?"
Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I'm the head of the family, so call me the Prime Minister.
Your mother is the administrator of the money, so call her the Government.
We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the people.
The maid, we'll consider the working class, and your baby brother, we'll call him the future.
Now think about that and see if it makes any sense."

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what dad has said.
Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the maid's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the maid.
He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now."
The father says, "Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about."
The little boy replies, "The Prime Minister is screwing the working class while the government is sound asleep. The people are being ignored and the future is in deep $#&@!”
