| No Comment | The Marketing Federation of SA (MFSA) is really trying hard to ramp up its image and put behind it all the negative publicity from the previous year. Its Winter School of Marketing Excellence started in Sandton today, with top speakers on Marketing Leadership, and at really affordable rates to attend. Most speakers gave of their time freely, including the international speakers of the calibre of Business in the Community's Sue Adkins and Interbrand's Tom Blackett, so it's a real pity that the industry isn't out in full force to support the MFSA's sterling efforts to create a unified profile of this industry and polish up its image. Those of us who are here are fortunate in being exposed to these excellent speakers and the opportunity to network with such market leaders at the conference over these three days, as well as the associated events at Markex next door (7 - 9 June) and the MFSA's Brand Awards tomorrow (7 June). A big up to Dee Blackie and her team!
Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

Holding marketers accountable While the future of brand management might be ringing loud and clear for the accounting fraternity, with brand value now firmly represented on the balance sheet, the new International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS 3 Business Combintaions) is also putting marketers under pressure to build and maintain this new class of asset.
Telling the South African story of branding... Story telling is internationally recognized as a powerful medium for communicating corporate messages. Africa, and particularly those of us on the southern tip of the continent, have story telling running deep in our veins, and so it is particularly apposite that we should utilize this art form as our key driver for the Brand Awards, 7 June 2005.
Are companies going to the blogs? [John Bradfield] With the proliferation of blogs, should we take them seriously, and how will they impact PR/corporate communications? Blogging is at an early stage of development and, like the early days of the Internet, predictions about its impact need to be taken with caution. However, although websites were initially viewed skeptically, they now form part of the formal armory of integrated corporate communications tools.

IT marketing suffers no fools The South African IT marketplace is driven by global as well as local players endeavouring to achieve successes in an industry that is by no means free for all. And the same goes for IT marketing teams, staying ahead of the pack, driving global strategies with local flavours and getting the message across effectively are only a few of the challenges they face on a
daily basis.

Ditch the pitch [Clive Webster] The debate as to whether the advertising pitch has any merit continues to rage. In my experience as first an advertiser, then a marketer and for the past 22 years in perception measurement, I have found that selecting an advertising agency through the pitch process is an exercise in waste and futility. It is entirely possible to choose an ad agency that is exactly suited to delivering upon an advertiser's advertising requirements, without the word 'pitch' ever entering the equation.
