The paucity of innovation at this year's Young Creatives competition one hopes is not a reflection of a general trend among young talent in the industry. As part of the judging process, yours truly and the senior creative judging panel were not impressed with the lack of original thought - in at least three instances almost identical concepts originated from students as well as the agencies. Various thinkers believe there is no such thing as an original idea left, as all ideas are contaminated from many sources, but aren't our students being taught to think outside of the box, to be "disruptive" with their work? Where was the 'wow' factor? And in cases where there was good strategic insight, it was not pushed through. As one creative head was heard to comment: "Our jobs are safe... there's no danger from any of these youngsters!"

Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@bizcommunity.com

  • The best kept secret...
[Louise Marsland] Forget the winds of change, there's a fresh breeze blowing through The Loerie Awards, rather than a hot highveld gust - as The Loerie Awards committee packed their bags and took flight to search from hinterland to winterland, for a venue for the rejuvenated awards, in a trek that has kept the industry guessing.

Innovative use of cellphones as marketing medium increases globally
[Stanley Edwards ] MIPTV - Cannes, France: The use of mobile phones globally is huge and because of its reach and penetration, should be on every brand's shopping list as a marketing medium. As more and more mobile phones become multimedia enabled, which includes video with 3G, it offers a very media-rich experience.

    Net#work triumphs at AdReview Awards
Net#work BBDO was named as the Ad Agency of the Year at the AdReview Awards, last night, Thursday, 14 April 2005. This accolade, for the second time in a row, comes after a year in which Net#work displaced TBWA Hunt Lascaris as the country's top creative award-winning agency.

On-demand revolution and the threat to TV advertising
[Stanley Edwards ] Cannes, France: Digital Video Recorders (DVR's) and video-on-demand systems are transforming the experience of television. Fundamental changes are occurring in the way TV and content is being consumed and funded, which includes funding by brands. The challenge is how the industry will reconstruct itself in a schedule-free world where advertising values are diminishing and new platforms such as broadband and mobile are starting to capture a significant share of advertising revenues.

Latest technology makes real-time armchair reporting a reality
Real-time broadcasting has been the exclusive domain of rich media networks but the internet, and blogging technology in particular, have now made this possible. Stanley Edwards, a partner in Cape Town-based Platypus Productions will be attending the MIPTV conference in Cannes, France and updating Bizcommunity.com readers each day. Apart from daily reports for Bizcommunity.com, Edwards will report back on the key issues and learnings with a Blog, Vlog and Podscast - a first for SA's production community.

    The emerging market(er)
[Terry Levin] Last week I braved the rush hour to Old Mutual Business Park to catch UCT Unilever Institute's session on the little understood (and unfashionably named) Black Emerging Market - now apparently acceptably interchangeable with the term Black Middle Class.
