The contract will run for eight years and will include a full upgrade of the N1 route's toll plazas and the maintenance and support of the systems.
The entire South African National Roads Agency project to upgrade the road will cost about R600 million and has been awarded to Tolcon-Lehumo, which will operate the toll road.
City Press says the contract to upgrade the road will be completed by 2019 and will span 377km running from Gauteng, through Limpopo to Zimbabwe.
