"Drivers must pay to use roads" - Ndebele

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele says that motorist must pay to use South Africa's roads, whether they like it or not, according to an article published by Business Live.

It says that Energy Minister, Dipuo Peters - backed by President Jacob Zuma's government - accused those people who reject the toll roads wanted to spend their money on "comforts" and not on essential services.

Ndebele says the tolling of Gauteng's freeways was "irreversible" and the government would not budge on its stance that people had to pay to use the roads.

Business Live says that Ndebele and the government accepted that it was "a done deal" after the South African National Roads Agency had invested R20-billion to improve the roads and do the upgrading work.
