The customer is always right... even if they're wrong

Chris Moerdyk[Chris Moerdyk] Walk up to the average South African retailer and whisper the magic words "customer service" and he'll react as though you stuffed a terminally venomous South American crotch eating spider down his shorts. And I really don't understand why. It isn't a stringent set of rules and regulations. In fact, customer service is nothing more than an extremely simple way of making lots of money. No more and no less.

Join the joyride in Drive
[Eugene Yiga] Ryan Gosling is fast becoming one of my favourite actors. Who can forget his performance as a drug addict teacher in Half Nelson or as a delusional guy in love with a life-size doll in Lars and the Real Girl? And then there was his amazing work opposite Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine. Well, we can now add Drive to the list of his accomplishments.

Media awards 2011: Rock(y) and roll
[Gill Moodie] 2011 was a rocky year for the South African media industry, with the ANC seeming to back off, and then not, on the controversial Secrecy Bill - and with slowing economic growth dampening revenues and newspapers continuing to suffer sustained circulation decline. But there were also high points, let us not forget. [multimedia]

Inn On The Square... in Cape Town's centre
[Brian Berkman] As Rezidor Hotels prepared to open newly built Park Inn-brand hotels in Gauteng they withdrew their brand from their Green Market Square, Cape Town location because, according to a previous Rezidor executive, the owner wasn't willing to spend what would be required to bring it up to Park Inn's upgraded code.

Ad awards aren't necessary - they're imperative
[Odette van der Haar] As human beings, we want to identify the best of the best, and the advertising and communications profession is no different. In truth, however, awards are about more than just separating the cream from the whey.

Committee to Protect Journalists blasts Protection of State Information Bill
[Sipho Hlongwane] The message that South Africa is sending across the continent with a Protection of Information Bill that is severely detrimental to the freedom of information is one of the reasons why the government needs to reconsider the bill. This was according to two leading lights of the CPJ, who were in South Africa on a POIB fact-finding mission and to lobby the ANC to change its stance on the bill.

Social media demands brands change their ways
[Steve Cragg] People - your customers and mine - are using the tools provided by social media to great effect in their purchase decision-making process. While consumers have always shared their opinions on products and services, digital amplifies their ability to communicate these to their peers, and not only friends and family, but also to friends of friends of friends.
