The worst marketing job ever done - SA as a holiday destination

22 Oct 2009 09:4119 commentsBizLike
In the last year I've visited the US and the UK and the one thing they have in common is their fear of South Africa as a destination. Unless they've already been here, you'll hear the same refrain - “South Africa, oh no, wouldn't consider going there - way too dangerous.”
So alright, no good kidding ourselves, we do have a crime problem. But hey, I've just come back from Dallas where the local TV news featured a story on restaurants closing down. Not from lack of customers but from repeated break-ins. And how come everyone there has an alarm on their house?

Lack of information

More than anything, it's the complete lack of information on SA that's staggering. I even met your typical American (who was actually German but had lived there for around 30 years) who said when he heard I was from SA, that he knew the capital of SA, no, I wasn't to tell him, err, “it was carved out of a jungle”.

At this point I did mention we didn't have any jungles - “No, don't tell me, it's on the tip of my tongue - Sun City, that's it.” Sad but true.

So that's a funny story but what's not funny is the way ex-pat South Africans continually put down their homeland. While in the US, I heard from numerous people that South Africans had told them:
  • That it wasn't safe to walk on the streets in SA
  • That there was no way we could hold a decent FIFA World Cup
  • SA was such a backward nation
  • ALL our politicians were corrupt - somehow they ignored what was on their own back yard here
  • There were very few real houses - mainly shacks
  • There are riots every day
  • You needed bodyguards to go out of your house
What is being done

The sad thing is what is being done to educate people overseas, especially with 2010 looming. I tell you what - virtually nothing or at least nothing I've seen in my travels.

On my recent flight back from Atlanta, the plane was full, mostly with Americans. But were they coming to stay in Johannesburg. Oh no - not Johannesburg. The ones I spoke to were either catching immediate connecting flights to Botswana or staying close to the airport 'til they could catch flights out the next day.

We should have offices all over the US and Europe pumping out good news stories about our wonderful game parks and coastal resorts, not to mention the overwhelming beauty both within and surrounding SA.

I keep reading about people being appointed to jobs marketing this country. Well, so far, guys and gals, I'm sorry but you're just not cracking it. It's not so much marketing the good stuff but simply taking away the fear that the name South Africa conjures up.

Maybe its a good idea to let them live in ignorance-
Just what do we expect to be able to communicate about our wonderful country? Sure we can advertise all the beauty and wonders that South Africa offers, but the news that is generated out of our country speaks for itself. There are riots in Diepsloot and other places because of non delivery, our crime rate is appalling, our politicians are corrupt etc.

So is it at all possible to pretent and present an image that is incorrect? People will find out for themselves. South Africa has got a bad image out there - only we can change it from within. Meanwhile, let them belive that South Africa was carved out of the jungle. Let them stay in Detroit and get caught in a gang land shooting.

We need to address the real issues and not paper over what ails this country. Posted on 22 Oct 2009 10:20
Agreed - marketing SA is poor-
I totally agree with the fact that our marketing sucks. I do not agree we need offices all over the world. That, like visiting endless trade shows, just wastes marketing money and justifies numerous overseas trips by pathetically inefficient government officials. What's in it for me? .... rules the tourism industry. A subtle form of corruption! Money should be spent on content (the story) and media (distribution and reach), and not on salaries and overseas trips!! Will we get our act together before the World Cup? Posted on 22 Oct 2009 14:23
Agree-
I so agree with you on the 'what's in it for me' in the SA tourism industry. So true. Posted on 22 Oct 2009 14:24

Not so sure-
At least 4 out of the 7 points mentioned are true in my opinion. We should stop fooling ourselves and face the reality that the so-called 'challenges' are fast becoming enormous issues. Posted on 22 Oct 2009 14:23
Africa has many positives!!-
Our continent and country has it's problems, but so has everybody else. Let's focus on the positive and expose this region to the world. Research proves that people who visit RSA often come back because they have a great experience. And we need tourists and tourism - it is the base on which we can build the long term success of our society. Posted on 22 Oct 2009 14:28

Marketting southafria-
Marion,

Good article. For this purpose I have create a website to help people find out more about southafrica. It is still in beta but it is getting traction, but I am hoping this will be a valuable resource for people coming down to visit.
It will be excellent forum for the local people from south africa to correct any misconceived notions people may have about this great land.

Agreed: perception is greater than reality-
The only way that people overseas are going to change their minds about SA is if they repeatedly hear good, true stories about SA. Simple as that. That's also the message I'm trying to get out about People with Brain Damage. However, because people have grown up with negative stories about Brain Damage, it's easier to carry on believing that negative story. The same applies to 'darkest Africa'. Worst Marketing Job ever done-
I agree, the way we market SA is not aimed at intelligently targeting the changing of perceptions. I hope that our websites www,sagoodnews.co.za and www.africagoodnews.com will help in some way. The challenge is to change the global narrative on SA. Our own media, Carte Blanche etc don't help and nor do they tell the truth of this country Posted on 23 Oct 2009 09:55

What are we ourselves doing to change this?-
I know that our country has a lot of issues that need to be addressed. Crime, poverty, lack of jobs etc. But what are we ourselves doing to address this? Why do we always rely on others to do the job for us? It is within our power to do whatever we can, wherever we can to be part of the solution. I travel extensively and am very honest about the situation here in SA but I never miss an opportunity to educate people on just how wonderful South Africa and (most) of her people are. I am very proud of this beautiful country. Posted on 23 Oct 2009 10:17

Brand South Africa IS crime infested!-
The truth is: IT IS true that the levels of violence that accompany criminal activity in South Africa are frighteningly high compared to many other countries that are not officially at war! Marketing South Africa will always be a challenge because our marketers (and I used to be one of them) will always find themselves in the defensive when confronted by anecdotes of crime and have to put crime stories into some form of perspective. One cannot always blame those South Africans who left as a result of direct crime suffered by themselves or their loved ones and expect them to automatically support our marketing messages.

On the other hand, all the budget and marketing strategies in the world will not stop some people from thinking that because we are in Africa, we encounter wild animals all over the place...or that we do not have real modern structures in South Africa Posted on 25 Oct 2009 22:13

Our leadership is lacking-
Crime, crime, crime and the political response is a kneejerk or a futile over-reaction. SA's problems are primarily social - the loss of real Ubuntu and leadership that chases the gravy train rather than leads.

It's sad that one of the most popular pages for international visitors in a tourism website is the one on public safety - http://capeinfo.com/crime-public-safety. Posted on 26 Oct 2009 14:54

Tell A Good Story-
I am originally from the US and have been living in SA for 10 years now. I am well aware of the ignorance people have about South Africa and have a pretty good answer for how to fix it. By telling a good story. We need to tell better stories that the world can relate to.

Botswana is currently reaping the rewards from a very successful television series called No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. This series (with crime as a backdrop) has catapulted Botswana from an unknown African place to a must visit destination for middle-class Americans. When we look at the type of films South Africa has put out, there is little wonder why we continue to stay in the places to fear category. This is not to say that the films we make are not good, just that they are not particularly inspiring from a tourism perspective (Tsotsi- Gangsterism, Yesterday- HIV, District 9- Apartheid as well as a host of other heavy films). Jeff - you are so right-
Well said Jeff. I totally agree with you. Having watched all the movies and TV series you mention, I know I'd much rather visit Botswana. Perception and first impressions are everything. Posted on 28 Oct 2009 15:18
No.1 Ladies Detective agency - realism!-
Please don't try and have us believe that this banal show is portraying Botswana or Africa in a realistic way!

However, your point is right, the image portrayed of South Africa is one of gangsters and bad stuff, but the image of Botswana is not a true image either. A sanitised Africa - I have lived in Africa most of my life and that is just not Africa either. Posted on 29 Oct 2009 08:59

A media-based approach is what's required-
A media content driven approach is a good one. The entertainment industry is a major factor in the US's cultural domination of the west. Another good example is "Neighbours" and what that did to make Australia more accessible to (for example) an English market. Posted on 31 Oct 2009 06:33

Damn Jeff!-
I totally agree with u Jeff! The reason why many South Africans are obsessed with the U.S "IS" because of HOLLYWOOD, it all starts with T.V and the movies! Never thot about it that way, utterly true!
The reason why they still think we live in bushes must be becoz of the schuster filmz lol, Damn, film is powerful! Just had an epiphany Posted on 4 Nov 2009 23:41

B careful tho-
I must ask the tourists to be careful tho, especially in the city centres it isn't safe to just walk ther its wise to have a guide or to follow a designated route, i'm a local but i can no longer count the number of times i've seen the "blade" Posted on 4 Nov 2009 23:46
