Public voting for 2010 poster opens

11 Sep 2007 10:5420 commentsBizLike
South African residents are being invited make their voices heard from today, Tuesday, 11 September 2007, by voting for one of three designs to become the official poster of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is the second time since the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany that the residents of the host country are actively involved in the selection of the official event poster.
“It is important for us that the people in the host country have the final say in the choice of the official poster which will represent their country all the way up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I also want to congratulate the South African design industry on the creation of such wonderful artwork, all of which express the diversity and colourfulness of Africa in a symbiosis with the beautiful game,” comments FIFA General Secretary Jérôme Valcke.

The voting process will be supported by an extensive print campaign in Media24 newspapers across South Africa to ensure that everybody in the host country can make their choice. While only people living in South Africa can take part in the ballot, everyone around the world will be able to have a first glimpse of the choice of artworks on the official website, www.FIFA.com/poster, during the selection phase.

From a total of 16 creative entries, all submitted solely by South-African based agencies, three proposals have been pre-selected by a jury made up of FIFA General Secretary Jérôme Valcke, CEO of the 2010 South African Local Organising Committee Danny Jordaan, Minister in the South African Presidency Essop Pahad, Deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi, South African playwright and author Wally Serote, and artist and director of the Vega School of Brand Communication Gordon Cook.

Chance to win tickets

Participants can cast their vote for the official poster until Sunday 30 September and will also have the chance to win the very first two tickets to be awarded to the public for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, provided by FIFA World Cup sponsor MTN.

The selected official poster will then be unveiled at the preliminary draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Durban on 25 November.

“The official poster selection process is now entering a very important public participation process. We want this to be an African World Cup and a people's World Cup. This is the beginning of our attempts to involve the people of our country in shaping the very important messages and images of this FIFA World Cup. The people of our country and continent have walked this road with us since we first attempted to host this event in 1994 and we have to continue this journey to deliver Africa's first FIFA World Cup together,” adds Jordaan.

"I believe the three posters that are up for consideration are all of a high quality. We want as massive a public participation process as possible from our people and I appeal to South Africans to participate in numbers. This is one of the most important public phases we will have in relation to the 2010 FIFA World Cup," says Essop Pahad.

There are three ways for South African-based fans to vote over 11 – 30 September: either online at www.FIFA.com/poster, via SMS or via phone (interactive voice recording). Both the SMS short code and the interactive voice recording system are provided by MTN.

Notthe2010poster-
I had a look-see at the posters. They're not that great, I see another "Notthe2010logo" scenario brewing with unhappy people thinking they could do so much better. The concepts are not that great. A woman giving birth to a ball? The guy's head in the shape of Africa looking up at a ball is ok I guess but the colours don't flow into one another. I voted for the first one with the ball in the sun and the guy doing that cool move they do in soccer.

Oh well, 2010, here we come :-) Hopefully Bafana Bafana can get their act together by then. Posted on 11 Sep 2007 12:26
Unable to vote, not reside in SA?-
I live in Cape Town and have just tried to vote and been told by this Fifa site that I can't because I don't reside in SA...there is obviously a problem recognising my computer. Anyone else having this issue? Can FIFA please address this. Posted on 11 Sep 2007 13:43

I also can't vote-
FIFA, fix your geolocation sniffing please, or this competition will be a huge failure and upset the public in a big way! This page gets it right, it detects my city and country perfectly: http://proxify.com/whoami/ Posted on 11 Sep 2007 14:52
MTN making money?-
I am also unable to vote online and I reside in Jhb. The only way to vote now is by MTN sms or phone call just another way they are making a buck... Posted on 11 Sep 2007 15:02

Agree-
It's my favourite too. I do find the background a little boring and unfinished though, but it's simple and I love it. Posted on 11 Sep 2007 16:03
If I can't vote, then neither can thousands of others!-
Cool idea, cool posters, pitty the the technology is not allowing a lot of South Africans to vote. Posted on 11 Sep 2007 15:54

Birth at last-
I have had a look at hte posters, i think the pregnant woman poster is the most natural and the only one which makes sense, as we are about to give birth to the first world cup in Africa. also the background symbolises africa and real. the other poster are just intern designs trying to hard Posted on 11 Sep 2007 18:44

The Best??-
Is that the best south africa can do??
I'm a graphic designer and I tell you I've seen 100% better designs for the most simple things.

Dissapointed.co.za
Appaling Poster-
Poster A: shows a parched, dry landscape with no hope
Poster B: is more indicative of revolutionary Africa than a soccer tournamount
Poster C: Not sure if the picture is of a pregnant woman or a soccer ball.
Go back to the scketch board, please

What part of .co.za does your selection website not understand. MTN seems to want more income from their sms competition. Regrettably, this is the opening window to the SA world cup, then I pity the real event for imaginanative creation. I suggest you shut this website down and fix it. Posted on 18 Sep 2007 08:32
MTN is making money out of this voting-
It's not that they are being demostratic about choosing the right poster. Unfortunately, we now know how cellular technology works. These are other means of making money and acquiring cellular traffic volumes. This would also put they at an advantage to use that revenue to pay the designers of the posters. If I am wrong about it, then MTN must at least make this voting free only to its subscribers. It only make sense to non-MTN subscribers because obviously they have to pay for switching expenses. MTN is already an Official World Cup sponsor, why are they doing this to us. This is already the same as using the World Cup to make business. I wonder if FIFA is technically awear of this. A VERY POOR REFLECTION ON MZANSI'S TALENT.-
I'm sorry but the devastating standard of what we're putting out into the world is portraying a lack of passion.
The creative work that I've seen, starting with our 2010 logo has been extremely low-grade.

I don't think it's wise to have the creative process, of such an immense event, directed by the custodians of the 2010 board. If anyone must direct the conception of a creative work, especially for such a project, it must be by people who specialise in creative doing and strategic thinking.

The responsibility is more than just a design job. It relates to how we currently see our environment, that being a country (South Africa) that is resilient in it's goal to become an unified nation. Not some slap-on, make everything multi-coloured and kla mind-set, that we currently endorse.

All I can say is that as a creative working for a creative company, I understand the criteria that any job has to live through for it to be seen by the client. In this case the whole world.
Let's embrace our beauty, and let's begin to embrace the time and skill it will take for us to create beautiful things. Clearly not everyone can design great logos or posters, but it's up to the creative fraternity to decide.
Not the board of directors.

OUR 2010 CREATIVE CAMPAIGN IS A VERY POOR REFLECTION ON MZANSI'S TALENT.

I am part of a group of young people who aim to do great things even with no money, and very limited time:
