Support small business![]() MasterCard's consumer purchasing survey released earlier today revealed that most South Africans aren't looking to cut down on spending. And although fewer consumers are planning on saving their cash, more are looking at the bigger picture, and will be putting it toward long-term assets like houses and retirement plans. Last week Kanchana Moodliar, MD of Fashion Channel, challenged big businesses to help small business practically - by paying them on time. A recent casualty of late or non-payment is the inaugural Your Child Expo, which sadly had to be cancelled a month before launch. A group of Eastern Cape crafters, however, made a big impression at an overseas exhibition, selling out all their wares. The one thing they wish for now is a better response from their homeland. So buy local. It's lekker. Shan Radcliffe, Retail editor Please send retail news to: retailnews@bizcommunity.com Responses to this column welcomed in our new online editor's column archive. 16th South African Music Awards nominees announced RETAIL The MTN South African Music Awards Nominees Launch celebrations took place at Taboo in Sandton yesterday, 4 March. The Main Awards Ceremony will take place in Sun City on 16 and 17 April, 2010. [Design Indaba 2010] "What the....are you doing at my party?!" RETAIL [Sindy Peters] The Design Indaba 2010 party organisers, running an hour late, left us standing outside the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town last Thursday, 25 February, as security assembled the fencing and tried to placate a fairly patient crowd who were beginning to heckle. On eavesdropping, we found out that they were still trying to assemble the all-important bar. Just as we were about to join the howling wind in huffing, puffing and blowing the place down, they let us in, which is when we were greeted by a bunch of stark-raving mad loons. Theatrical dining at Vaudville RETAIL [Riccardo Spagni] There are many restaurants famed for their food. Many, too, are famed for their atmosphere. Vaudeville is one of the precious few that combines both atmosphere and fantastic food into one ridiculously impressive bundle. But it is not your atypical dining experience. In order to go to Vaudeville you need first to change your mindset. You are not merely attending a live performance, nor are you going out for a meal. Effectively, what this means is that you will be paying through your nose, sure, but you will be combining the cost of a fantastic three-course meal with a phenomenal show.

"If you're attacking your market from multiple positions and your competition isn't, you have all the advantage and it will show up in your increased success and income." - Jay Abraham "What the customer demands is last year's model, cheaper. To find out what the customer needs you have to understand what the customer is doing as well as he understands it. Then you build what he needs and you educate him to the fact that he needs it." - Nicholas Dewolf "Innovation! One cannot be forever innovating. I want to create classics." - Coco Chanel "Never underestimate the power of even the smallest marketing promotion. As long as it's smart and on target, the smallest marketing promotion can make a huge impact." - April Guy "The recognition and understanding of the need was the primary condition of the creative act. When people feel they had to express themselves for originality for its own sake, that tends not to be creativity. Only when you get into the problem and the problem becomes clear, can creativity take over." - Charles Eames More...  Submit a Quote | Advertisement: ![]() Advertisement:
