| No Comment | In a week of high drama, the ad industry 'took back' the Loerie creative advertising awards, by simply refusing to support any attempt by the Marketing Federation of Southern Africa (MFSA) to run them again next year. The MFSA, dogged by controversy, pulled off a pretty poor show this year and quite frankly, the advertising industry felt sidelined and that the MFSA had 'diluted' the brand. It is now up to the MFSA, to show that it is 'bigger' than the bitter politicking behind the scenes and hand back the Loerie brand to the industry - to be run by a Section 21, non-profit organisation. The MFSA has lost the support of the creative industry - which it should not forget, has the MFSA's key membership (marketers) as its clients. These selfsame clients apparently support the creative industry's move to 'rescue' Loeries. Will the MFSA end up as an organisation without members? 2005 is certainly going to be an interesting year!
Have a good one! Louise Marsland, Editor, editor@biz-community.com

| Marketing | | Making BEE a profit driver, not a performance drain Black economic empowerment should not be seen as an invasive add-on to business practice foisted on companies by government. Correctly implemented, BEE can be a powerful tool for business growth.
MFSA launches learnership project The Marketing Federation of Southern Africa (mfsa) has launched a countrywide learnership project, providing students with the opportunity to get on the job training in the areas of Marketing Communications, Sales and Marketing, Brand Management, and Customer Management.
MFSA calls for inclusivity and calm The Marketing Federation of Southern Africa (MFSA) Chief executive, Mpho Makwana, today welcomed the invitation by the Advertising and Communication Association (ACA) to discuss the future of the Loeries.
ACA releases draft advertising BEE scorecard [Louise Marsland] At an event that was almost overshadowed by the furore over the Loerie Awards, the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) has released its draft empowerment scorecard to the media for discussion and comment by all advertising and communications companies, as well as the broader marketing and communication industry stakeholders.
New 'Loerie' awards unpacked [Louise Marsland] The Creative Circle (CC) hopes that the Marketing Federation of SA (MFSA) will show their 'goodwill' and return the Loerie brand to the industry without a financial penalty. Either way, whether it's a revamped Loerie awards or by another name, the new creative advertising awards launched by the industry Wednesday, 24 November, go much further in promoting creativity and growth in the advertising industry than previously.
The future of the industry: ACA manifesto of intent The ACA describes 2004 as its 'watershed year' and has announced plans for its restructuring into a respected service provider for the industry to address agency and client issues. "Paradoxically, at a time that the industry took stock of itself through in-depth future research and realised it has come to a crossroads, it has also been a year that the ACA took flight. A number of tangible achievements catapulted the advertising industry into a new gear," the ACA reports.
The ad industry reclaims the "Loeries" with a new award [Louise Marsland] BREAKING NEWS: The advertising industry has effectively hi-jacked the Loerie Awards from the Marketing Federation of South Africa (MFSA), as the battle to reclaim the creative impetus and magic that was Loeries, reaches its apex. The Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) today announced that it will be launching a new awards for the industry if the Loerie brand is not returned to the advertising industry.
Will the Loerie Awards become as extinct as the Dodo? [Louise Marsland] So what if the MFSA refuses to give up the Loerie brand? We will have to have a new name for the industry's most illustrious advertising awards. And to avoid them ending up like a turkey, or an ostrich with its head in the sand, as characterized by the MFSA's dealings with the creative industry, we will need something that spells out a new direction. Do we stick with the fauna and flora theme, or do we go for something that characterizes the ubuntu that the ACA wishes to instill in the new awards? Bizcommunity.com invites our readers to post their suggestions...
Empower your company - just add a learner [Louise Marsland] In a special offer, not to be repeated this festive season, the AAA School of Advertising has 18 Johannesburg-based and 11 Cape Town-based, fully qualified and trained learnership students - available at a huge 'discount' as companies qualify for huge benefits when employing learners.
