MACRA starts G-Mobile licence revocation process

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) announced early last week that it has started the licence revocation process of Global Advanced Integrated Networks (G-Mobile), a company that would have been the country's third mobile phone service provider. MACRA PR officer Zadziko Mankhambo said they were compelled to start this process after G-mobile failed to beat a third deadline of 12 April 2010.

“Our team has started evaluating the company's activities to compile a report of failure to roll out within the period given,” he said.

Mankhambo explained that an audit will be conducted of the progress achieved especially in the areas of infrastructure development before passing its final verdict.

A few days before the deadline G-Mobile's project liaison officer Victor Chidziwitsano conceded that the deadline was too tight to allow them make meaningful strides.

In its last ditch attempt to save its licence, the company and its partner Beryl Telecoms had entered into a service management pact with Telkom South Africa to operate and manage the network.

G-Mobile director of administration Harold Muyawa was still adamant when he talked to one of the local dailies on Thursday, 15 April 2010, insisting that they were in the process of rolling out.
