Is This Day going to bring their irresponsible journalism to South Africa?

After the newspaper triggered bloody riots in Nigeria over the Miss World contest the question begs asking - What kind of national newspaper is This Day going to introduce to South Africa early next year?
The Nigerian newspaper announced after their failed bid for CNA that they were going to introduce a weekly South African version. It is this selfsame publication that triggered the riots over the Miss World contest in Nigeria with their irresponsible journalism - an article that suggested that the Prophet Mohammed would not have opposed the staging of the pageant in Nigeria and might have married one of the beauty queens competing for the Miss World crown was totally insensitive to the volatility of situation. The journalist may have been fired, but the fact remains that more than 175 people are dead because of it. South African Muslims are perhaps not as fanatical as Nigeria's, but nonetheless we still need journalism in this country to be sensitive to different peoples' beliefs.

More options
    Nothing irresponsible
    Muslim fanaticism-
In a democracy with a free press a journalist should be able to express his opinion without having to incure the wrath of the state or those intollerant to his point of view.

The fact that over a hundred people died over a newspaper article is testimony to a religion and idiology that has become a distructive force like so many other religions in the world. Posted on 15 Oct 2003 15:25
    Freedom implies choices-
Having freedom implicitly means you have the opportunity to make choices, both good and bad. That this journalist should have been physically curtailed is possibly questionable, but that he/she should have shown more wisdom is undoubted. One only hopes that if a newspaper like This Day gives leeway to irresponsible journalism, then the general public in South Africa will have enough common sense to recognise this weakness and effectively shut the operation down by simply not buying the papers.
