Loeries heading for Cape Town?

27 Jul 2008 22:357 commentsBizLike
While the atmosphere on the last day of Loeries 2008 turned out to be rather mellow, it seems most people agreed that something was missing this year as the energetic vibe just wasn't here, with most of the daily activities either cancelled or not quite as entertaining as they ought to have been.
Today's lineup of fun things to do featured inter-agency beach volleyball and the SABC Inter-agency Battle of the Bands. The former didn't happen because the nets were stolen, and there was a short stint of touch rugby instead. The latter turned out to be a one-band performance.

Apart from starting late because the judges were missing in action, the only other band to participate, according to the MC, decided to drop out of the competition when they heard AAA School of Advertising band playing as they felt completely inadequate. Apparently, they drove down towards the beach, heard Mad Love playing and just kept on driving! So not much of a battle after all, making the judges' presence in the end completely unnecessary.

Anyway, Mad Love won a broken TV to throw out a hotel somewhere other than in Margate, free drinks and a meal courtesy of Johnny Rocket. The band had no choice but to do an encore performance to give the small crowd that gathered something to talk about.

So why does there appear to be a loss of interest from festival goers? Has Margate become boring and blasé and only for the young creatives interested in drinking and partying? Do the older, more senior, creatives and execs no longer come because the environment is not suitable for the presumably more dignified kind of networking they prefer?

Rumor has it that we could see a change of venue for Loeries 2009 or the year after. Keep an ear to the ground as it may be goodbye Margate and hello to a more southern venue in the future... There are whispers that Cape Town is in the running!

The something missing was me.-
It is simply clear as day... The 'something missing' was me and my incorrigable antics.

Maybe I'll see you there next year, silly billy's.

Please move Loeries from Margate-
I didn't go this year, my own decision, because Margate is a dirty, dingy, grubby venue that makes me feel like I'm an 18 year old student again with 2 things on my mind: booze and sex. Where is the glitz, the glam, the prestige. Let's bring sexy back to Advertising and get rid of the Margate 'spring break'. It might not be quite so appropriate for people to throw their undies at the VIP's if they're in a slightly classier venue. Margate, however, is entirely appropriate for those sort of shenanigans. Same diff-
Cape Town is lame, seriously. It's bad enough they think they are so great, if we take the Loeries there, we'll make them believe it.

If we are moving the Loeries, bring it to a real city like Joburg, but honestly do we really need to.

Most people in this industry dont really care about sport, and rock bands, moving it to some other city wont change that.

Besides, we already have the 'design Indaba' in Cape Town, which is just about all the Cape-Town I can take for one year. Posted on 30 Jul 2008 09:54

THIS IS NOT THE OSCARS-
Stop fooling yourselves, this is a mickey mouse event which brings together a bunch of people who have hugely inflated opinions of themselves.
Lets get serious most of the work you guys produce is a load of crap. Most local TV ads suck. there are however some very clever exceptions. The Loeries is populated by young "WANNABIES" who can hardly "PEE" straight
All i can say is "GROW UP" and give the money to someone needy.
The awards mean nothing anyway in the real world Posted on 17 Oct 2008 09:36

LITTLE 'OL LOERIE BASH-
Listen guys if all the great creative minds in the land can't put together a show for their own people, then its scary to imagine whats out there..!!
If you can't organise a sucessful show for your own , how the hell can you do it for your clients. There are just too many people giving themselves awards in this industry. The great news for the industry is that the clients money is tax deductable so they dont care a hoot, which is obvious judging by the crap on TV etc. same old crap day-in, day-out Posted on 17 Oct 2008 09:49
